3. Biographical Information William Bradford was the founder and governor of the Plymouth Colony. He was a passenger of the Mayflower across the Atlantic Ocean. The Pilgrims arrived in Plymouth Massachusetts, in 1621. First social contract was signed by all male settlers called the Mayflower Compact. 1622-1653 Bradford was a governor. He would separate religion, which was a colossal situation with the first settlers, with secular concerns. Plymouth Plantation was written between 1630-1651. It described the story of the pilgrims from when they lived in the Dutch Republic in 1608 through Mayflower to 1647. He also compared religion with the mission of the pilgrim. It was sort of a journal with the ending being a list of the passengers of the Mayflower and what happened to them afterwards.

4. Literary Elements This story is an example of plain structure and very religious. The story is mostly an allusion because the text refers back to the religious aspect and God’s actions a lot in the story.

Historical Context Puritanism was a term used in England for protestants that wanted to end or “purify” the catholic aspects of the church of England September, 1620 about 100 (Pilgrim, Puritan) English men and women sailed aboard the Mayflower that landed on Cape Cod John Smith named the area Plymouth More than half of the original settlers died in the first winter but by 1627, Plymouth was a stable colony In 1691, Massachusetts absorbed the colony, ending the independent province

6. Themes One of the major themes of this story is, God’s Rewards. When the first Puritan settlers came to America they believed heavily in certain religious ways. One being that God is mightier than anyone or anything. God plays a huge role in this story by rewarding the people with their land. The people rely on Him to make a path for them and they follow it. “ What could now sustain them but the Spirit of God and His grace? May not and ought not the children of these fathers rightly say: “Our fathers were Englishmen which came over this great ocean, and were ready to perish in this wilderness; but they cried unto the Lord, and He heard their voice and looked on their adversity,” 19 etc.? “Let them therefore praise the Lord, because He is good: And His mercies endure forever.”’’

Key Events ●People struggled with sea-sickness, and other illnesses during their journey ●Pilgrims arrived in Cape Cod ●Emphasized struggles, hardships, and privations suffered by the pilgrims in an attempt to show that the pilgrims had been chosen for success by Providence ●All they had was God to lean on after all of these struggles
