Monday, March 4 th Entry Task Write down the following definitions and match them up with the correct terms Definitions: 1.The rate at which velocity changes with time 2.A measure of mass in motion 3.The force that keeps an object moving in a circle Terms: centripetal force, acceleration, mass, contact force, momentum Schedule: Chapter 12 Pre-Test Bill Nye- Gravity Objective: I can understand important information about the unit mousetrap car project I can understand that Gravity is a force exerted by masses Homework Read/RSG 12.1
2
Bill Nye Notes Take down minimum of 8 notes on important things about gravity in your notebook Focus on what you have not learned yet. Draw at least one labeled diagram
3
Tuesday, March 5 th Entry Task Gravity is pulling the moon toward the center of Earth. Write a brief paragraph explaining why the moon does not crash into Earth. Schedule: Gravity Notes Mythbusters- gravity Homework: 12.1 Quiz tomorrow!!!!!! Objective: I can understand that gravity is a force exerted by masses Please Have on Desk: 12.1 RSG
4
What we learned before Every action force has an equal and opposite reaction force Newton’s laws are used to describe the motions of objects Mass is the amount of matter an object contains.
5
Gravity Complete a four square vocabulary diagram for the term Gravity. Definition: –the force that objects exert on each other because of their masses Characteristics: –universal force, measured in m/s², acts between any two objects Example: –gravitational pull between sun/earth, moon/earth, earth/all objects on earth. Nonexample: –earth repels objects near it
6
Force of Gravity Depends On… Mass of the objects –More mass greater force of gravity –If mass is doubled, force of gravity doubles Distance between the objects –More distance less force of gravity –If distance is doubles, force of gravity is 1/4 th
7
Gravity on Earth For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction Earth pulls on objects on Earth (gravity) Objects pull back on Earth (too small of a force to recognize b/c of objects small mass compared to Earth)
8
F=mg If an object is dropped on Earth it accelerates towards it because of the gravitational pull. This acceleration is called g –g=9.8 m/s² Newton’s 2 nd law –Formula F=ma –Substitute g for a –F=mg Formula for calculating the force due to gravity on a mass close to Earth’s surface
9
Weight vs. Mass Mass is a measure of how much matter an object contains. Mass is always the same no matter where an object is located (Earth vs the moon) Do a four square vocabulary diagram for weight Definition: –force of gravity acting on an object Characteristics: –changes if gravity changes, measured in newtons Examples: –a 4 kg bowling ball weights 39 N Nonexamples: –mass in kg is not a weight
10
Gravity and Orbit Do a four square vocabulary diagram for the term orbit Definition: –the elliptical path one body, such as the moon, follows around another body, such as Earth, due to the influence of gravity Characteristics: –smaller objects orbit around bigger objects, centripetal force Examples: –moon orbiting the Earth Non examples: –Neptune does not orbit Earth

Wednesday, March 6 th Entry Task Write a paragraph about what happens when you try to walk on ice. In your paragraph compare walking on ice to walking on a sidewalk in the summer. Schedule: 12.1 Quiz NBC Learn- Curling Friction Notes Homework Read/RSG 12.2 Class will be held in room 211 tomorrow (next to library), GO STRAIGHT THERE! You will be marked tardy if late Objective: I can understand that friction is a force that opposes motion Please have on desk: Gravity Notes from in class
12
Friction Notes Take your own notes-any way you want- on 12.2 Re-read it, write down important information such as –Vocabulary Definitions –Labeled Diagrams –Summaries Must have a minimum of TWO pages in your notebook of thorough notes. THIS WILL BE GRADED tomorrow
13
Exit slip questions 1.When friction occurs, what type of energy transfer happens. 2.What is one purpose of fingerprints 3.Explain at least 3 things that would be dangerous or impossible without friction
14
Thursday, March 7 th Entry Task Please log into the computer using the following username: room 105 student password: cougars You will then log onto the internet using your username and password Wait for further instruction If I see misuse of the computers you will loose credit for this assignment. Examples of misuse are: working on computer when not supposed to be, going to websites that do not pertain to assignment, using any programs that are not needed for the assignment, etc. Schedule: MTC Webquest Homework: Investigate Friction in Air Objective: I can research important information about my mousetrap car project Please have on desk: 12.2 notes 12.2 RSG
15
Friday, March 8 th Entry Task Share your hypothesis and procedure from last nights homework with a partner. If you did not do your homework, think of one on the fly. Discuss the results of your experiment and if they supported your hypothesis. Schedule: Bill Nye- Pressure Pressure Math Homework: Read/RSG 12.3 Objective: I can understand that pressure depends on force and area Please have on desk: Investigate Friction in Air
