Foundations for Success  Setting up a notebook  Deciding where to “sit”  Seeing you write everyday!  Teaching “How to know what to pick…”  Use Read Aloud to get them “thinking”  Brainstorm “what” and “how” to write  Appropriate Word Choice (Word Wall, Notebook Dictionary, etc.)  Teach spelling and mechanics through reading  MODEL and practice the behaviors you want kids to have.

9. Choice – increasing buy-in and engagement  After building stamina in Writing for several days, introduce Check-In and Choice  Handout: Checking-In – Purpose and Goal Videos:  Adding Choice  Checking In  Debriefing Checking In Process
