8 Foundations for Success  Setting up a notebook  Deciding where to “sit”  Seeing you write everyday!  Teaching “How to know what to pick…”  Use Read Aloud to get them “thinking”  Brainstorm “what” and “how” to write  Appropriate Word Choice (Word Wall, Notebook Dictionary, etc.)  Teach spelling and mechanics through reading  MODEL and practice the behaviors you want kids to have.

9 Choice – increasing buy-in and engagement  After building stamina in Writing for several days, introduce Check-In and Choice  Handout: Checking-In – Purpose and Goal Videos:  Adding Choice  Checking In  Debriefing Checking In Process

10 What needs to be in place to get started?  Book boxes  Quiet signal  Gathering place – brain/body break  Materials for I-charts  What else?

11 For Next Week  Read to Self can begin the first day of school  Refer to “First 5 Days” Document for planning mini-lessons for Read to Self and Work on Writing.  Let’s just focus on these two areas for the first couple weeks of school…and doing them well.
