SAFETY Life Science Mr. P
2
What is it? Protecting yourself from injury or death Using common sense to deal with a situation Preventing something from occurring
3
Why? In the lab, many things can be considered dangerous, such as equipment and chemicals.
4
So what are the rules? 1) Always report an injury or accident to the teacher. Don’t try to fix it yourself.
5
Rules 2) Do not taste, smell, or touch anything in the lab without being given prior consent. Do not open any cabinets or drawers. Do not try to “experiment” on your own.
6
Rules 3) No horseplay or running in the classroom.
7
Rules 4) Work in pairs or groups when instructed to do so.
8
Rules 5) Broken glass or spilled chemicals, regardless of how mild they are, should be reported to the teacher. Do not try to clean it up yourself.
9
Rules 6) Wear proper lab attire, such as gloves and safety goggles. Hair should be tied back when working with fire and chemicals.
10
Rules 7) Do not eat, drink, or chew gum in this classroom. Yes…this is a safety rule.
11
Rules 8) Always keep your work area clean and return all supplies as instructed by the teacher
12
Rules 9) Read all lab directions very carefully.
13
Rules 10) Never take anything home unless given special permission.
14
Starter 8/9/10 Take a new starter sheet from the front desk. Question: What do you do during a fire drill?
15
Fire Drill What do you do?
16
Fire Drill Lets practice. We are going to line up quietly, and walk out to the field. Do not talk during this and stay in a straight line.
17
Earthquake! What do you do during an earthquake?
18
Earthquake! Remain calm Get under your desk or a piece of sturdy furniture Cover your head and hold on to the side of the desk
19
Earthquake! Do NOT scream Do NOT run Do NOT go in the doorway Do NOT just stand or sit there
20
Earthquake! Lets watch a video and point out what they did good and what they did bad.

Earthquakes What did they do good?
23
Earthquakes! What did they do bad?
24
Earthquakes Can be very powerful Can occur at any time (can NOT be predicted) Are common out here…they happen all of the time.
25
San Andreas Fault Literally right down the street Can cause an earthquake greater than magnitude 8 Can rupture at any time
26
Earthquake! Can last a long time Can cause significant damage Can knock out power (or jam phone lines)
27
Earthquake Check out this video of a pool in Mexico when the 7.2 Mexicali quake hit last Easter
28
Final Thoughts Earthquakes are not to be scared about, as long as you are prepared: Know what to do during a quake Know what to do after a quake Have an earthquake kit in your house
29
Safety Test We are going to take a short safety test, to ensure that you are prepared for this course. If you do not pass this test, you can not do labs until it is passed.
