Music Lab #8 Instruments of the Orchestra Woodwind Family Piccolo Flute Flutes and piccolos are hollow reeds with holes pierced at various intervals that produce different pitches. Ancient Egyptian statues contain replicas of the oldest flutes known. During the seventeenth century, the flute was first used in the orchestra. The piccolo, the smallest instrument in the orchestra, is the flute’s little brother.

The clarinet of the orchestra was not fully developed until 1840. This version of the instrument is still used today. They are single reed instruments. Instead of blowing through two reeds, the musician blows through a single reed and its mouthpiece.

Bassoons are double-reed instruments and are played by blowing through two reeds attached to the mouthpiece. The bassoon’s tubing is almost 7½ feet long.
