LEARNING INTENTIONS 1) To understand a range of roles within friendships. 2) To know how to establish friendships and maintain them. 3) To develop interpersonal skills and processes to enhance friendships.

Learning Outcome: Students will recognize and accept that people are different.

ACTIVITY #1 1.Cut out the shape of an object that is important to YOU. Eg. A flower, a car, a piece of clothing, or a cultural item. It must be A3 size. 2.Divide this shape equally into 4 parts. Label these: People Places Possessions Passions People Places Possessions Passions

ACTIVITY #1 Who are the important people in my life: friends, families, heroes…and what do I value about them? - Write these under ‘People’. People Places Possessions Passions What are the important places in my life: birthplace, holiday place, or bedroom, and why do I value these places? - Write these under ‘Places’.

ACTIVITY #1 What are my important possessions, such as gifts from special people, and why do I value them? - Write these under ‘Possessions’. People Places Possessions Passions What are my passions, such as sport, music, food, hobbies, saving the environment, and how do these contribute to my goals and desires in life? - Write these under ‘Passions’.

People Places Possessions Passions My Dad – he always made me laugh. My Mum – she is smart. My best friend Hannah – she is caring. Dion – he is always there for me. Auckland – It’s where I’ve grown up and lived all my life. There’s plenty to see & do. The beach – I like relaxing, having a picnic, going for a swim and smelling the salty air. My wedding rings – remind me of my special day. My degree & post- graduate diploma – hardwork pays off! My photos – lots of memories. Teaching – I enjoy Helping students Learn new things and help them get Somewhere in life. Music – I enjoy Listening, singing and dancing to music. It helps me get energized and Inspired. Travel – I love To see new Places and Experience New Cultures.

What are values? Values are what we consider to be important and worthwhile. Honesty Freedom Peace

What are attitudes? Attitudes are how we think or act in a certain way.

ACTIVITY #2 Do you Agree or Disagree with these statements?: “It’s more important to have one or two really close friends than to have lots of general friends.” “If a person has no friends, it’s their own fault.” “Put-downs are all right if they are from a friend.”

ACTIVITY #3 Kim has two tickets to go to the Justin Timberlake concert, which all the cool kids are going to. Kim has to decide which person from her class to take. Who should Kim choose? 1) The person she sits next to in Science, who can’t afford cool shoes, let alone go to a concert? 2) The smartest person in the class who helps Kim with her Maths (she got 90% in the last test)? 3) Kim’s cousin, Chris, who is currently suffering from acne, has braces, and is feeling self-conscious about his weight? 4) The most popular kid in the class who will only include people in her group if they are cool?

ACTIVITY #3 What attitudes or values led you to your final decision? Your group must come to a consensus as to which person Kim should take to the JT concert.

ACTIVITY #4 Listen to this story and write down how each situation would make you feel and why… It’s Friday, and it’s my birthday… My family gives me a really nice present, but it isn’t what I had asked for… At school, the whole class sings “Happy Birthday” to me… I get my English test back, I got 50/100 (50%)… At lunchtime, my basketball team wins the inter-house competition… After school, I rush home to get ready for my party. On the way home, the girl/boy I really like tells me that they are coming… My best friend arrives at my party holding hands with the girl/boy I really like… Some of the kids arrive with alcohol… They get drunk and start a fight… During the party, I make a date to go to the movies tomorrow with the girl/boy I like…

ACTIVITY #4 Which feelings are positive? Which feelings are negative? Why do different people have different feelings in similar situations? Why might a person have a mixture of feelings about one situation?

Parents, friends, workmates, pets, teachers, etc. Identify the important features of friendships for each of these age groups. Eg. Nurturing, sharing secrets, company, love, etc.

ACTIVITY #5 Across our lifespan, we share similar needs but that the nature of these needs and who fulfils them in relationships will change. For example, people find love or comfort from different people, could be a friend, a spouse, or partner.

ACTIVITY #6 What qualities do you value in your friends? -Honesty -Loyalty -Kindness -Supportive -Good listener -Generous -Humour -Forgiving Write each quality on a separate card.
