Reading a Thermometer

Celsius – also known as centigrade is the standard used in the scientific community world wide. It is shown on this thermometer on the left. 0°c is the freezing / melting point of water. 100°c is the boiling point of water.

Fahrenheit – a traditional unit of temperature still used customarily in the United States. Named for the inventor of the mercury thermometer. 32°f is the freezing / melting point of water. 212°f is the boiling point of water.

When reading a thermometer it is important to first determine the increments of measurement. Ask yourself – how much is each mark worth. If there are 5 lines between the 70 and 80, then each line is worth two degrees. 74°f

If there are no lines between the 20 and 30, then estimate based on the distance it is from each of the known increments. 23°c
