The town lies on the left bank of the Hron River. It is the main town of the Levice District, which is the largest district in Slovakia. The town's heraldic animal is a lion with three tails and the town's colours are green and yellow.

History First attacked by the Turks in 1544, the town was set on fire while the castle was left unharmed. Ottoman rule ended in the summer of 1685. Slovakia became part of Czechoslovakia. This left more than 900,000 Hungarians in the newly formed state. The Hungarian population was deported and replaced by Slovaks, the rate of Hungarians fell from 89% to 12%.

St Joseph's Church, Roman Catholic, with a baroque monastery St Michael's Church - Roman Catholic, in St Michael's Street (Sv. Michala). It is from the 2nd half of the 18th century. Calvinist Church - the only Calvinist church in the town, the end of the 18th century Synagogue - Jewish, the 19th century

The main square (Kossuth Square) - many historical buildings can be found here. The Town Hall - built in 1902, the second floor was built while lifting the roof in 1927. Teachers’ Academy - a secondary school, the east point of Kalvaria Hill, north of the main square, built in 1911
