We are going to speak about the project The Name of Russia which we prepared for our English lesson. The project started when the Institute of Russian History defined the initial list including 500 names of the most worthy representatives of our history.

People who voted had to choose 12 the most worthy ones. The voting of the first stage of the project finished on the Day of Russia, on the 12 th of June. They are the most famous writes, rulers, tsars, great commanders, a scientist and an outstanding reformer.

In our opinion the choice was difficult. they are all sons and daughters of Russia. They all have contributed to the fame and prosperity of their Motherland, everyone in his own way and field. How can we compare them? And who has compiled this list of candidates? How can one personify Russia in ages? What’re the criteria? I think no one can be compared to another one. It’s the wrong direction. One can only be compared to himself of yesterday and present.

We have discussed all these questions on the preparatory stage. Another problem was to translate all the information into English. We learnt every biographies and had to analyze their deeds. We made the reasearch work. That’s why the fulfillment of this project was not easy.

Nevertheless, to our mind the idea of this project is very interesting. After all many people were allowed to learn more about great figures of our country and people told their opinions about those who has played the main role in the history of Russia. We had voted for different figures but for the conference we chose Catherine II.
