Introduction This course emphasizes the structure, function, and inter- relationships of organisms in their environment. The course traverses cells, organisms and population dynamics, with topics including energy, diversity, genetics, anatomy and physiology, and ecology. Projects and discussions on recent advances in biology enhance the course. This course includes laboratory activities to enhance and clarify biological concepts. Upon completion of the course students will be well versed in various biological topics and be prepared for the regents examination.

THINGS YOU’LL NEED Classroom Materials 2 Loose-leaf 3-ring Binder (*one will be left in class at all times) Black or Blue Pens Several well sharpened #2 Pencils Colored Pencils

THINGS YOU’LL NEED TO REMEMBER – EXTRA HELP DAY = WEDNESDAY – TEST DAY = THURSDAY – EMAIL ADDRESS = MRKRAUZ@AOL.COMMRKRAUZ@AOL.COM – SKYPE EXTRA HELP NAME = BKRAUZ **AVAILABLE AS NECESSARY – CLASS WEBSITE!! (VERY IMPORTANT) CLASS WEBSITE

THIS YOU’LL WANT TO KNOW Grading Tests, papers, projects = 65 % Quizzes = 10 % Labs = 10 % Homework = 10 % Class Participation = 5 % Final Grade Determine by the following: MP1 + MP2 + MP3 + MP4 = 90 % REGENTS = 10 % Grading Tests, papers, projects = 65 % Quizzes = 10 % Labs = 10 % Homework = 10 % Class Participation = 5 % Final Grade Determine by the following: MP1 + MP2 + MP3 + MP4 = 90 % REGENTS = 10 %

THIS YOU’LL WANT TO KNOW

THINGS YOU ARE GOING TO LEARN – HOW TO THINK LIKE A SCIENTIST!! – BASIC CHEMISTRY, BIOCHEMISTRY, CELL BIOLOGY, CELLULAR ENERGETICS, ANIMAL AND PLANT ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY, REPRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT, GENETICS, EVOLUTION & ECOLOGY

THINGS YOU ARE GOING TO LEARN – HOW TO THINK LIKE A SCIENTIST!! – SCIENCE COMES FROM THE LATIN, “SCIENTIA” = KNOWLEDGE A SYSTEM OF ACQURING KNOWLEDGE THIS SYSTEM USES OBSERVATION AND EXPERIMENTATION TO EXPLAIN NATURAL PHENOMENON

HOW TO THINK LIKE A SCIENTIST A COMMON MISCONCEPTION IS THAT YOU NEED TO BE “SMART” TO KNOW SCIENCE

HOW TO THINK LIKE A SCIENTIST SCIENCE IS A WAY OF THINKING, NOT A SUBJECT IN SCHOOL…WHILE INFORMATION WE HAVE GAINED BECAUSE OF SCIENCE MAY BE DETAILED AND ABUNDANT, EVERYONE USES SCIENCE AS A TOOL EVERY SINGLE DAY…WHETHER THEY KNOW IT OR NOT!!

HOW TO THINK LIKE A SCIENTIST EXPLAIN THE FOLLOWING… MITCHELL COHEN – BIRTHDAY  SEPTEMBER 3 RD BRITTANY WEINBERG – BIRTHDAY  SEPTEMBER 11 TH

HOW TO THINK LIKE A SCIENTIST WHEN YOU WATCH COMMERCIALS, AND THEY SAY…”4 OUT OF 5 DENTISTS” RECOMMEND CHEWING TRIDENT AFTER MEALS… WHY WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT??

HOW TO THINK LIKE A SCIENTIST THINKING LIKE A SCIENTIST MEANS THAT YOU COLLECT ALL THE RELEVANT INFORMATION, AND ENSURE ITS ACCURACY (NOT PRECISENESS), BEFORE DRAWING ANY CONCLUSIONS!!

HOW TO THINK LIKE A SCIENTIST LEARNED TO THINK LIKE A SCIENTIST DIDN’T LEARN TO THINK LIKE A SCIENTIST

HOW TO THINK LIKE A BIOLOGIST BIOLOGY IS A FIELD OF STUDY THAT UTILIZES SCIENTIFIC THINKING AS A TOOL TO DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF LIFE LET’S GET STARTED
