Physical Sciences Complex at the University of Maryland 30sept05 MAPP
2
Physical Sciences Complex Goals Design a center that reflects the mission and values of the constituents Create a place for reflection, interaction and creative collaboration Advance speculation and knowledge in critical areas Support innovation, discovery, communication and application of the next “big ideas” Re-think the role of education and communication beyond the enduring purpose of preparation of future researchers and teachers: develop and implement a new model for education and communication in physical sciences Provide the physical environment required to support the experimental and educational programs of a first class research center for the physical sciences
3
30sept05 MAPP Manifestation of Mission, Values, and Goals in the Building Fabric Design a facility that is a didactic tool--an experiment in itself Design a complex that highlights the juxtaposition of old and new, tradition and invention Stake new revolutionary territory with the building fabric—its building technologies, systems, operation, and inhabitation Allow the building to become part of a sustainable future--use new applied material, system, and renewable energy technologies Conceive of the building and its site as a system of a higher order, rather than a collection or checklist of unrelated novel technologies

Advantages of Phasing + All ties to Computer & Space Sciences Established First + Minimum impact on IPST through Phase I + Phase I West Atrium forms first linkages within the Complex + Central Atrium creates linkages through campus + Viable image and program mix in all phases 30sept05 MAPP
