North Carolina History Today we will learn about how people affect the food: 1. Native Americans 2. Farming 3. Today’s food SS Level 4Ms. Lewis
2
Native Americans The first tribes of Native Americans that lived in North Carolina were hunters and gatherers. They would hunt wild animals that lived in the area and gather wild fruit, nuts, and berries. They lived completely off the land and what they found in nature.
3
Native Americans When they hunted they would follow the animals. Animals such as elephants, wild horses, and bison roamed the lands along the eastern coast of present day North Carolina.
4
Native Americans (cont) We no longer have animals like that in this area because the more you hunt an animal the less there are. Therefore these animals either moved away or died out.
5
Early Settlements Some of the first settlers came to North Carolina with apple seeds from their own country. These seeds grew well in the Western part of NC. Originally apples were grown as a food source for families. Now it has become a major business for many apple farmers even today.
6
Early Settlements Early settlements also weren’t familiar with how to grow crops here in NC. The soil along the coast is mostly sandy and therefore they were not able to grow things as they had in England. Native Americans showed the settlers how to grow crops.
7
Native Americans and Settlers Working Together… Some Indians taught the settlers how to grow crops such as sunflowers, maize (corn), and squash. By teaching the Settlers how to grow crops it helped them survive.
8
Farming in NC The Lumbee Indians farmed as a way of life for many years. They would grow crops to live off of and sell for money. Hogs were very important. They would raise them to eat. North Carolina still has many farms and crops that are important to our state and economy. Hogs are a huge industry in NC today.
9
Important Crops in NC We will look at the following website to see some of the most important Crops in NC still today. http://www.ncagr.gov/stats/ge neral/commodities.htm
10
Today’s Food Our food today has been affected by the Native Americans as well as the early settlers. We no longer have the same wild animals that were originally here, but we do have ways to grow crops such as corn and squash. We have a huge apple industry in NC as well.
11
Today’s Food Many Native Americans cooked soups, corn bread, and deer. Today we still eat and cook these types of foods. The Native Americans have impacted the recipes we still cook today.
12
How people have affected the food…. As you can see through our examples people can impact the food of a place in many different ways. It could be in hunting animals, finding ways to plant and grow certain crops, planting new crops, or passing down recipes and traditions.
13
Extension Activity Can you think of a different way that people could impact the foods that are eaten or grown in a certain place? Draw a picture to show your idea and write a description to go with it.
14
Until Next Time… Thanks for following along. Next time we will learn about how people of different cultures express themselves through art.
