Science and Technology in the Environment Weather and Climate
2
17.01 – Define terms related to weather and climate.
3
General Terms Weather Climate Latitude Longitude Altitude Precipitation Thermometers Temperature Humidity Dew Point Rain Sleet Hail Relative Humidity Atmospheric Pressure Weather front Cloud Fog
4
Terms Defined Weather The current condition of the atmosphere, including temperature, wind, moisture, and atmospheric pressure Climate The weather that prevails generally The temperature, wind and moisture that generally are in an area An average of all the weather conditions in a location Weather and climate go together The kind of weather a location has determines its climate.
5
Latitude The imaginary lines that run east and west on the earth, parallel with the equator Longitude The imaginary lines drawn north and south on maps Altitude The point on the elevation of land, which lies above sea level
6
Precipitation Any form of moisture that falls to the earth Thermometers Devices used to measure temperature Temperature A measure of the amount of heat in something Humidity Amount of water in the air
7
Dew point The temperature of the air when dew begins to form Rain Water that falls from the atmosphere in liquid forms as drops Sleet Frozen raindrops Hail Precipitation as large lumps or balls of ice
8
Relative humidity A comparison of the amount of moisture in the air with the ability of the air to hold moisture Atmospheric Pressure Pressure exerted by the atmosphere at a certain location Weather front The meeting of a warm air mass and a cold air mass Cloud A visible aggregate of tiny water droplets or ice crystals in the atmosphere Fog A cloud with its base at, or near, the found
