Organization chart 29/03/11 1th RPC General Meeting - Pigi Paolucci 7 I’m glad to have many phd student and post-doc in the LV3 organization chart. Most of them are in the DPG and are participating to the data analysis of the RPC and Trigger performances Bari, Ghent, Korea, Sofia, Uniandes……. Let me underline the perfect integration of the 6 Korean Phd and post-doc. 3 of them are already in the DPG chart.

Main goals – 2011-2012 29/03/11 1th RPC General Meeting - Pigi Paolucci 8 Main scientific goals are: In priority order 1. High efficiency of the RPC data takingTC/RC 2. Assure an high quality of the dataDPG/RC 3. Clear set of results (performance and studies)DPG 4. Build the RE4 upgrade systemTC/Up 5. Enlarge the collaborationMB/IB 6. Manpower balance & budget consolidationMB/IB but this is not enough for us and we have to do more and more to improve our project….(see next slide)
9
More goals…… 29/03/11 1th RPC General Meeting - Pigi Paolucci 9 Study and underline all the aspects in which the RPC could play a central role in CMS: Alternative reconstruction algorithms Peculiar Trigger regions How recover DT/CSC temporary inefficiency using RPC More goals - we really need to work on: 1. New institutions and more young physicists 2. Help young people in maturating in the proper way 3. Move toward a “muon system” and “muon services” 4. Use the central CMS structures/group as much as we can
10
Possible strategies 29/03/11 1th RPC General Meeting - Pigi Paolucci 10 New institutions can be attracted by the 2 nd step of the upgrade (2017-2018) at high eta region. They should join RPC project previously to learn about CMS and the muon system. How can we help young people in maturating: 1. Visibility and responsibilities 2. Work on different aspects of the project and not only one (detector, DAQ, trigger and data analysis) 3. Collaborate more and more with the CMS central projects 4. Conferences and papers 5. Work in group and not alone – be part of some task force
11
2011-2012 data taking It’s now time to work, we have 2 long years of data taking Shifters and experts have a delicate role and we have to support them as much as we can: Improve our tools and instructions Organize training period for everybody Support them during the “crucial” period Operation Manager and Data Manager shifts are now counted as central shift. Training period is mandatory to get the OM/DM driver license from the Run coordination. 29/03/11 11 1th RPC General Meeting - Pigi Paolucci
12
2010 Data analysis We already have a lot of data to analyze and to publish: Muon performance paper is already under development: Some results have been already approved (efficiency) We have to understand better other sections (noise) Editorial board it is now ready to work Conference talks and posters have to be defined in advance (at leas 2-3 months) Instrumentation Conferences are a very good training center for phd students and not only. 29/03/11 12 1th RPC General Meeting - Pigi Paolucci
13
Scientific results to underline 29/03/11 1th RPC General Meeting - Pigi Paolucci 13 2010 results: many already approved in March Noise studies: linear dependence rate.vs. luminosity FEB configuration: great improvements (Anton, Karol, Philip) HV scan: great success of the RPC collaboration See next presentations
14
Steering Committee 29/03/11 1th RPC General Meeting - Pigi Paolucci 14 Chairman: Hafeez Hoorani Members: A. Colaleo, M. Maggi, A. Sharma, W. Van Doninck The RPC management board will consult the SC to get help on very urgent and crucial tasks and to solve delicate scientific issues. The experience of the 5 senior physicists members is a guarantee for the RPC project and will help us a lot in the future.
15
HV scan – sociological exercise 29/03/11 1th RPC General Meeting - Pigi Paolucci 15 Steering Committee was consulted to give us guidelines about the “calculation” of the high voltage working point of every single chamber. The answer was fast, very professional and clear. Let me thanks a lot the committee. Run and Technical coordination did a great job in organizing the data taking and in following it hour by hour (pressure correction, threshold setting….) DPG team was able to provide results in real time (weekend) Info and results circulated in the best way A first exercise of cross-coordination and coherent work in the RPC project
16
HV scan results 29/03/11 1th RPC General Meeting - Pigi Paolucci 16 Marcello, Cesare and Juan Pablo are now working and the data analysis in the DPG team. Many chambers were already working in plateau during the 2010 data taking but not all (see Marcello talk) 2011-2010 comparison Working points Cluster size check
17
Noise studies 29/03/11 1th RPC General Meeting - Pigi Paolucci 17 Noise group (Silvia, Mihee and Mircho) is doing a great job and it was not so easy to clean the data in order to spot the linear increase
18
FEB configuration 29/03/11 1th RPC General Meeting - Pigi Paolucci 18 There was a big effort to improve the FEB configuration in few weeks !! Now parameters are automatically loaded by the database The procedure is 5-6 times faster thanks to a firmware review A WEB GUI allow us to write/read the configuration parameters (different views) HERE THE TEAM Filip - main developer of the C++ part, Karol - main developer of the Java part, also responsible for configurationDB Anton - main tester of the product, main provider of ideas Krzysztof - main developer of the Trigger Supervisor Sajjad Asghar - coordinator of the DB activities. Imran and Atif - developers of the GUI. Let me thanks Hafeez and the Pakistan database experts to join the group.
19
2010 results 29/03/11 1th RPC General Meeting - Pigi Paolucci 19 Many results obtained by the DPG group have been approved by the RPC collaboration (efficiency, cluster size, spatial resolution, muography…)

Construction and docDB 29/03/11 1th RPC General Meeting - Pigi Paolucci 21 I would like to remind you we have hired a DB expert (Daniela) to work for 3 months on the construction DB. She is doing a very good job but is now stuck for lack of information and collaboration. Question: if the construction DB is not on top of our list of priority I will close to task Anton is supervising both the construction DB and docDB RPC docDB is almost ready. We need to clean our twiki page http://dev-cms.web.cern.ch/

RPC “social” dinner tonight at 20:30 29/03/11 1th RPC General Meeting - Pigi Paolucci 22 La Villa du Lac – Divonne Les Bains It is just in front le lake Sorry but not more than the 34 people already registered From Highway: 1. after the “douane” go straight 2. turn right at the second roundabout 3. After 400 meter there is a roundabout, go straight 4. The Hotel is on the left From GEX: 1. Follow “highway to Geneve” indication. 2. Then indication to “promenade” or “Villa du Lac”
23
Conclusions 29/03/11 1th RPC General Meeting - Pigi Paolucci 23 RPC project is in good shape Two years of data taking + upgrade is not an easy job for a small collaboration. We are 80 people Let me stress again that we have to improve and stabilize the present project and then eventually move manpower to the upgrade 2013-2014. Right now is still not the case !! It is important to work in a coherent way as we did for the HV scan and FEB configuration See you this evening
