DEFENSE MECHANISMS REPRESSION – painful thoughts / feelings are pushed away from conscious thoughts MOST BASIC OF ALL DEFENSE MECHANISMS RATIONALIZATION – act of making an excuse for a behavior COMPENSATION – covering up faults or weaknesses by trying to excel in other areas PROJECTION – seeing your own faults or feelings in other people, even when they do not have them Makes it easier to accept one’s own faults

DEFENSE MECHANISMS IDEALIZATION – allows people to see others as they want them to be Keeps them from seeing others as they really are DAYDREAMING – creation of make-believe events that seem more pleasant or exciting than the real world REGRESSION – acting less mature than you usually would DENIAL – refusal to recognize reality

DEFENSE MECHANISMS SUBLIMATION – replacement of undesirable impulses with accepting behaviors DISPLACEMENT – shifting the feelings about one person / situation to an object / another person REACTION FORMATION – hiding true feelings from oneself by acting in a manner opposite to the way that you would like to act SUPPRESSION – holding back or restraining
