4. Marsden Hartley Born in Lewiston Maine 1877 Won a scholarship at the Cleveland School of Art – 1892 Inspired by Kandinsky and marc he became an abstractionist and joined Der Blaue Reiter

5. What is Abstract Expressionism? It is a modern art movement with roots in cubism and Surrealism. It’s main focus was on what the artist was feeling and was often raw and impulsive yet beautiful. “…the canvas was not a picture, but an event.” – Maragaret Morse

6. When and Where The art form itself started in Germany around 1910-1920 but it really bloomed after the war. Abstract Expressionism became popular or well noticed around 1940’s in New York. Right after World War 2 and with the insurgence of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung’s ideas on psychoanalysis.

7. Why did this happen? The ideas were sparked by feelings after the war by both sides. Also, the psychoanalytical ideas of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung were part of the base of the paintings.
