what is a tag? A tag is a keyword or descriptive term associated with an item as means of classification by means of a folksonomy... - a collaboratively generated, open-ended labeling system that enables Internet users to categorize content such as Web pages, online photographs, and Web links.

yeh, but why? Tags help to improve search engine's effectiveness because content is categorized using a familiar, accessible, and shared vocabulary.

will it work for me? Yes! If used in combination with other content portals such as Flickr, del.icio.us, technorati and eventually apc.org.
