Early Humans Chapter 1 – Section 1 (Day 1) Objective: I can identify how early humans lived through examining artifacts,..tools, and prehistoric art.

What is the Stone Age? Historians call the early period of human history the Stone Age. –It is called the Stone Age because the people who lived during this time used stones to make their tools and weapons.

When was the Stone Age? The earliest part of the Stone Age is called the Paleolithic period or the Old Stone Age. –Paleolithic times began around 2.5 million years ago. –The Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) ended in about 8000 B.C. (10,000 years ago).

Who Were the Hunter-Gatherers? During this time in history, most people spent their time trying to find food. –Hunter-gatherers hunted animals, caught fish, ate insects, and gathered nuts, berries, fruits, grains, and plants. Because these people moved around all of the time, they are considered nomads.

The Invention of Tools Paleolithic people were the first people to use technology. –Technology is simply tools or methods that help humans perform tasks. A hard stone called a flint would be considered technology during this time. –Flint was used to shape other rocks so they could be used as an axe, hunting spear, etc.

Practice Makes Perfect! Over a long period of time, humans got better at making tools. They created smaller and sharper tools –Fishhooks –Needles –They could now fish with the fishhooks and weave and sew hides, baskets, and more.

Follow The Instructions 1. In one paragraph, explain how tools became more complex from the Old Stone Age to the New Stone Age. 2.
