The Elephant Girl had warned her granny that something might happen to her. She said, after I am gone a little blood will come on the wind. Take that blood and put it into a container. So she did just as she was told. The blood grew and new containers were needed. She put the blood in a large skin sack. One day, the other women and girls went into the bush to forage, leaving granny alone at home. While they were gone, the blood was transformed into a fully grown woman just like the Elephant Girl. She dressed her, putting copper rings in her hair as people used to do. When the women returned, they were astonished. They asked the Elephant Girl how that had happened and she replied: Granny, of course. Granny lifted me up. Granny spoke the word and I sat up and was alive. If it had been up to you others alone, I wouldn’t be here. Long ago Granny took me and sheltered me in a skin pouch and now I am alive again. That’s how it was. The old people give you life.
