1 Advanced Placement Language and Composition  Ms. Poindexter-Turk  Aka “Ms. Turk”  WELCOME !  Sit anywhere now. I will give you assigned seats later.  Summer Homework is DUE. I will pass around staplers.  DO NOT turn in Vocabulary.  Bring Tiger Mother book & Vocab every day this week.

2 AP Language & Composition  Is a class that explores Rhetoric. Rhetoric is defined as “any and all means used in the art of persuasion.”

3 What you will learn:  To develop an argument.  To analyze others’ arguments.  To synthesize (bring together)information to support an argument.  To write more effectively.  To read more closely.

4 Citizenship  In many ways, this class will develop each of you to be a more productive citizen in a democratic society.  You will be more informed and have a broader and deeper world-view after taking this course.

5 Overview of assignments:  Vocabulary test every other week.  OP Ed article analysis every other week.  In-class writing assignments  Multiple Choice practice  Reading of one non-fiction book per quarter, followed by an in-class write.

6 Overview of assignments, cont.  Junior Research Paper during 2 nd quarter.  Reading of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (3 rd quarter).  Weekly readings from textbook throughout the year.  And more!

7 The Exam  The AP Lang & Comp exam is on Wednesday, May 11 th, 8:00 am.  More info will be given to you in the spring.  The cost will be $92.00 and there are scholarships for students in need. See Ms. Wiskerschen.

8 The AP Exam on May 11th  The exam consists of two sections: 1. Multiple Choice – 55 multiple choice questions that focus on interpreting and analyzing rhetorical devices within a text (45% of final score) (1 hour) 2. Free Response - 3 essays; compose an argument, write a rhetorical analysis, and synthesize a variety of sources (55% of final score). (40 minutes per essay + 15 minutes to read synthesis material) Total of 3 hours and 15 minutes…

11 Homework  All must be typed in MLA format:  Proper MLA heading (see board)  Size 12 font  Times New Roman  Cite all sources in MLA format  Exception: you can single space & print on back of paper to save resources.

12 Supplies you will need:  3 subject spiral  Loose leaf notebook paper  Blue/black ink pens  Highlighters  Sticky notes  Reliable internet/computer access from home.  A reliable printer

13 Late Work  For any missing assignments you may be referred to the English learning lab. At the end of the unit the zero will be permanent.  The Learning Lab is in my room on Mondays and Wednesdays after school.  Absent work: you have as many days missed to make up the work, otherwise will be considered as late.  Late work will be reflected in your employability grade.  Late Summative Assignments: 10% will be deducted per school day.

15 JOB SHADOW  Begin planning your job shadow now. This will be an assignment in this class to be completed before the end of the first semester.  You MAY use your job shadow as one of your sources on your Jr. Research Paper, but it is NOT required.  The job shadow will be a requirement for your Junior Year Culminating Project and also an end of the year project for me.

16 A lil about Mrs. Turk  Bachelors of Arts from TCU in English & Art History.  Masters of Secondary Education from TCU.  15 years teaching experience, private, public, 8 th grade through university (USC & TCU).

18 I <3 Outdoors!  In my free time I like to spend time with my family and friends, read, run, hike, and go to art museums.

19 Consensograms!  Use the sticky notes and sticky dots provided to express yourself on the PURPLE butcher paper around the room.  Please do NOT put any sticky dots/notes on the GREEN butcher paper! Thank you!  When you are finished return to your desk to complete the “exit slip” activity on your desk!
