Environmental Information Systems
2
Goal of environment systems goal of environmental systems to create such information systems that helps implement environmental policy leading to a better environment approach in Kosovo inventory or evaluation of environmental systems in order to prioritise areas where current achievements should be further consolidated and where further progress is needed.
3
Elements of environment information systems institutional resources and arrangements ->legal framework -> -> information flow -> dissemination and communication
4
Information flow Biodiversity and/or environmental information generated for different purposes: everyday decision-making, technical, awareness-raising, education and the media in any possible format – reports, brochures, web; CD-ROMs, TV, etc. biodiversity indicators: protected areas, species, landscapes, etc. indicators related to biodiversity : pressures on biodiversity such as social-economical indicators illegal construction, agriculture, industry, forest exploitation (including firewood); infrastructure, waste (various chemicals), etc. databases, monitoring results, statistics, maps, biodiversity reports, research documents, observations. management plans for protected areas, strategies and other similar documents.
5
European networks related to biodiversity: Natura-2000 Strong legislation bases for protection protecting rare and endangered species and habitats was established by: 1)The Birds Directive (adopted 1979) 2)The Habitats Directive (adopted 1992)
6
European networks related to biodiversity: Natura-2000 implementation thru: European Commission European Environmental Agency European Center for Nature Conservation Member States
7
European networks related to biodiversity: Natura-2000 selection of indicators or parameters (species richness in Europe, number of threatened species, protected sites, etc.) standard data collection formed at the regional level mapping exercise
9
Database applications Databases (Microsoft Excel, Oracle, etc. good examples: EUNIS European Nature Information System: http://eunis.eea.eu.int/index.jsp ) http://eunis.eea.eu.int/index.jsp Technical networks (European Environmental Informaiton and Observation Network (EIONET) is a collaborative network of the European Environment Agency and its member countries.) Data portals - aim to provide online authoritative information on the environmental situation. (good examples: Biodiversity Clearing House Mechanism)
