3  Noun  A word, phrase, or clause that seems to refer to or describe an unintended word because of its placement in a sentence  Synonym: not clearly related  Sentence: Danny used a misplaced modifier in his sentence trying to describe what his father looked like.  Example: On her way home, Jan found a gold man’s watch. (gold is the misplaced modifier because it suggests that the man is gold, not the watch)

4  I ate only vegetables. I only ate vegetables.  The first sentence (I ate only vegetables) means that I ate nothing but vegetables— no fruit, no meat, just vegetables. The second sentence (I only ate vegetables) means that all I did with vegetables was eat them. I didn't plant, harvest, wash, or cook them. I only ate them.vegetables I almost failed every art class I took. I failed almost every art class I took. The first sentence (I almost failed every art class I took) means that although it was close, I passed all those classes. The second sentence (I failed almost every art class I took) means that I passed only a few art classes.

5  Noun  Interest paid on both the principal and on accrued interest  Synonym: total interest  Sentence: We were hoping we would not have compound interest on our car payment.  Example: paying interest on original loan amount plus the interest on that amount

7  Noun  A capitalistic economic system in which there is free competition and prices are determined by the interaction of supply and demand.  Synonym: non-government controlled  Sentence: The United States has a market economy where companies choose what they want to sell.  Example: Kohl’s decides that they want to sell Levi jeans instead of Lucky brand jeans because they are cheaper and more will sell so their company will make more profit!

9  Noun  A method of research in which a problem is identified, relevant data are gathered, a hypothesis is formulated from these data, and the hypothesis is empirically tested.  Synonym: research, investigation  Sentence: In biology today, we used the scientific method to determine why a plant would not grow under certain conditions.  Example: Putting a plant into different conditions and keeping data on both to determine why one would not grow.

11  Noun  A brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experience, as that prepared by an applicant for a job.  Synonym: biography, work history  Sentence: When applying for a job you should submit a resume along with your application.  Example: a neatly typed document containing work history, education, and personal contact information

13  Noun  A story or account of events, experiences, or the like, whether true or fictitious.  Synonym: book, report  Sentence: Ms. Dawdy read the class a narrative of the September 11 terrorist attacks.  Example: a paper written by a student

15  Noun  A recurring subject, theme, idea, etc., especially in a literary, artistic, or musical work.  Synonym: pattern, design  Sentence: That motif is quite simply an image of a woman in her partner's arms.  Example: The book contained poems that were all about freedom of speech

17  Noun  A fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward opinions and practices that differ from one's own.  Synonym: understanding, sensitivity  Sentence: The teacher had a high tolerance towards her students opinions on the work to be done.  Example: some people believe that women should not have abortions while others believe it is a woman’s choice
