Cellular Communication Keeping your body running

Cellular Communication Your cells must be able to “talk” to one another. Your cells must be able to “talk” to one another. Nerve cells must send signals Nerve cells must send signals Specific signals have to be sent throughout your entire body Specific signals have to be sent throughout your entire body As simple as telling a muscle to move, or as complex as preparing the entire body for a split- second reaction. As simple as telling a muscle to move, or as complex as preparing the entire body for a split- second reaction.

Cell Structure The key players The key players Nucleus and DNA Nucleus and DNA Ribosome Ribosome Endoplasmic Reticulum Endoplasmic Reticulum Mitochondria Mitochondria Cell Membrane Cell Membrane Protein receptor molecules Protein receptor molecules

Receiving the Message All about shape and size All about shape and size The signal sent to a cell fits into a protein receptor that is the matching shape of the message The signal sent to a cell fits into a protein receptor that is the matching shape of the message The receptor then sends a message to the inside of the cell telling it how to react based on the signal The receptor then sends a message to the inside of the cell telling it how to react based on the signal

Cell Structure

Processing the Message Based on what signal has attached to the outside of a cell, the nucleus then sends out signals telling the cell to do something or react a certain way Based on what signal has attached to the outside of a cell, the nucleus then sends out signals telling the cell to do something or react a certain way

Types of Messages Two main categories of signals the body sends out Two main categories of signals the body sends out Nerves send out neurotransmitters Nerves send out neurotransmitters Glands send out hormones Glands send out hormones

Neurotransmitters Nerves send signals from one nerve to the next by releasing signals that only occupy the small space between the nerves Nerves send signals from one nerve to the next by releasing signals that only occupy the small space between the nerves Signals sent out as result of a nerve impulse that travels the length of the nerve Signals sent out as result of a nerve impulse that travels the length of the nerve Impulse is an electrical signal that travels the length of the nerve. Impulse is an electrical signal that travels the length of the nerve.

Nerve Structure

Nervous System Includes brain and all nerves Includes brain and all nerves Brain Brain Central nervous system Central nervous system Brain, spinal cord Brain, spinal cord Peripheral nervous system Peripheral nervous system All branches of nervous system All branches of nervous system

Divisions of the Nervous System Somatic vs. Autonomic Somatic vs. Autonomic Autonomic = involuntary Autonomic = involuntary Somatic = everything you control Somatic = everything you control

Within the autonomic- Sympathetic nerves- Sympathetic nerves- Prepare you for emergency, bring organs “up” Prepare you for emergency, bring organs “up” Parasympathetic nerves- Parasympathetic nerves- Calm body down after event Calm body down after event

Directions  You will be assigned a topic- either an organ or set of terms. You will have to:  Explain it (5)  Produce a diagram/worksheet for the class to label (5)  Have at least 2 real life applications or examples to help people remember your information (5)  Present to the class using some sort of technology (5)
