5.  26 November 1857 – 22 February 1913  Swiss linguist, one of the fathers of 20th-century linguistics.  Developed a branch of linguistics called "Structural Linguistics.  Theory was still at a developmental stage.  The reconstruction of his lecture courses can be found in The Course in General Linguistics.  The analysis focuses not on the use of language, but rather on the underlying system of language.  This approach examines how the elements of language relate to each other in the present, synchronically rather than diachronically.
