I can list and explain the basic beliefs of the major world religions I can compare and contrast the Eastern Religions I can compare and contrast the Western Religions LEARNING TARGETS

There are five major world religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Each has 7 different units that you must learn; the number of followers that are worldwide, name of deity (higher power), the founder, the holy book, basic beliefs, and the symbols that represent each of the religions. Will the mysteries of religion ever be answered? o WHY IS RELIGION IMPORTANT? Religion can give people something else to believe in. Gives them faith in some deity, or higher power. It is important because religion and culture can go hand in hand. Such as in India, there are predominantly a Buddhist believing area of the world. Some religions such as Christianity, believe that all living and non-living things come from the creation of God, and without that God that created us, and the God that the people worship, we would not exist, and gives them a reason behind how the world began.

Followers Worldwide: 900 million people. Name of Deity: three gods, Brahma, otherwise known as “The Creator,” Vishnu, otherwise known as “The Preserver,” and Shiva, otherwise known as “The Destroyer.” Founder: There is no one founder, the founder(s) were developed over the years Holy Book: There is no holy book that is specific. The soul never dies but is continually reborn. Person is to achieve happiness an enlightenment after they free themselves from their earthly desires. Freedom from earthly desires comes from a lifetime of worship, knowledge, and virtuous actions. BASIC BELIEF S

The religion is practices predominan tly in India, where more then 80% of their population believes in Hinduism, along with other locations, such as Nepal. WHERE IS HINDUISM PRACTICED? Here you see India, where over 80% of the population believes in the religion, Hinduism. Here you see Nepal, where another good portion of the population believes in Hinduism.

Diwali, otherwise known as Dipawali; “The Festival of Lights” is a festival between October and November where people who believe in Hinduism place lights, or candles in their homes to symbolize the inner light that keeps them further away from the spiritual darkness. Buddhis m began in ancient India, but it is most commonl y practice d today in places like Sri Lanka, and Asia. WHERE IS BUDDHISM PRACTICED? Sri Lanka, one of the places that practices Buddhism. Asia, where Buddhist may worship and unidentified deity.

The Elephant Festival, held in the third Saturday of November is used to symbolize that Buddhists should help someone new into the realm of Buddhism. They use the elephant as an example because they must train wild elephants to teach them to be tame. THE ELEPHANT FESTIVAL

There is only one God, who watches over and cares for people. God loves his people but also holds people accountable for their sins, and shortcomings. People serve God by studying the Torah. BASIC BELIEFS

Judaism is most commonl y practice d in two places, The United States, and across the ocean in Israel. WHERE IS JUDAISM PRACTICED? The United States practices Judaism, where there are synagogues, temples, etc. Israel is the second major area of the world that practices the religion of Judaism.

Chanukkah is the celebration represented by nine candles in a candle holder most commonly referred to as a menorah. Each night, the candles are placed in the holder and lit from left to right. This is all in honor of the re- dedication of the Jewish Temple in the year 165 B.C. CHANUKKAH

Christiani ty is practiced in North America, South America, Europe, the southern portion of Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, etc. WHERE IS CHRISTIANITY PRACTICED? North America, one of the highest populations of worship in the religion of Christianity. Australia, one of the smallest continents of the world worships God and Jesus as their deities. Europe, where Christianity is also practiced as a religion, in several countries. South America, another among the Americas that worships the word of the Bible, the Christian’s Holy Book. New Zealand, the smallest area that keeps the Christian spirit alive. Africa, a larger continent that the clergy spread the Christian word.

The holiday celebrated by Christians that celebrates the birth of the baby Jesus, on December 25 th. It is also celebrated in commemoration of the journey the Virgin Mary and Joseph go to the manger to birth their baby boy, Jesus. CHRISTMAS

The celebration of the preparation of the journey to Mecca, which every adult Muslim, according to The Five Pillars of Islam, you should take the journey to at least once in your life. HAJJ

Islam is practice d in differen t areas of the world, such as Asia, and Africa, which are the major areas of the world where there is practice. WHERE IS ISLAM PRACTICED? Islam is practiced in Africa, along with Christianity, both monotheistic religions. Different parts of Asia, not primarily in India, where other world religions are practiced, such as Hinduism and Buddhism.
