Waves
2
Waves- Rhythmic disturbances that carry energy without carrying matter –Molecules bump each other and pass energy from molecule to molecule
3
Mechanical Waves Mechanical Waves- Types of waves that use matter to transfer energy. –Matter is called a medium Ex: Water is a medium for ripples on a pond Sound waves cannot travel in outer space because there isn’t any air
4
Transverse Waves Transverse Waves- Wave energy causes the matter in the medium to move up and down or back and forth at right angles to the direction the wave travels –Crests- High points in the wave –Troughs- Low points in the wave
5
Compression Waves Compression Wave- Matter in the medium moves forward and backward along the same direction that the wave travels –Ex: Sound Waves All waves are produced by something vibrating
6
Sound Waves Sound waves are created when a surface… 1.Moves upward and creates a compression- molecules are pushed close together 2.Moves downward and creates a rarefaction- molecules that are farther apart
7
Electromagnetic Waves Electromagnetic Waves- Waves that travel through space where there is no matter –Ex: radio waves, infrared, light (visible), U.V. (Ultraviolet), X-rays, and gamma rays Radiant energy is from the sun –92% are infrared and visible light…small amount is ultraviolet

Wave Project Include- Wave Type (Mechanical or Electromagnetic) Include- Motion (Transverse or Compression) Include- Examples of where you might see your wave. Include- Pictures
