Can you guess the title of today’s lesson?
2
Waves Learning Objectives MUST - describe what waves are, including the terms, wavelength, amplitude, frequency and speed. SHOULD - differentiate between longitudinal and transverse waves. MIGHT - use wave equations.
3
Types of Waves List as many different types of waves as you can. What are the similarities and differences between the waves.
4
Waves Waves transfer energy and information, they do not transfer matter. Example - Sea waves transfer energy from the waves to the shore, water particles only move up and down as a wave passes.
5
Transverse Waves
6
Longitudinal Waves
7
Examples of Waves Transverse Waves Sea waves Seismic waves Electromagnetic waves – Light waves – Microwaves – Radio waves Longitudinal Waves Sound waves Seismic waves
8
Wave Properties
9
Task 1 Complete the worksheet on waves properties. – Worksheet P1.5b
10
Waves continued...
11
Blending Wavelength Amplitude FrequencyHz Longitudinal waves Sound waves Wave speed Transverse waves
12
Wave Speed How fast the energy in a wave travels is the wave speed. There are two ways to work this out.
13
Example 1 If a wave carries a surfer 52 meters in 8 seconds, the wave speed is? 52/8 = 6.5m/s
14
Wave Speed The wave speed is also linked to the wave frequency and wavelength: Wave speed (m/s) = frequency (Hz) x wavelength (m)
15
Example 2 If some waves of 13 m wavelength have a frequency of 0.5 Hz then the wave speed is? V = 0.5 x 13 = 6.5 m/s
16
Example Questions Question 4 from active book.
17
Task 2 Complete the calculation worksheet. – Worksheet P1.5
18
Quiz Time Answer the questions in your books. You may wish to use a calculator. Don’t forget units!
