Recognize Linear Relationships and Solve Equations with Technology Using Video to Enhance the Teaching of Mathematics iLearn Grade 7 Math Session 8 of 8

Focusing Questions What Web resources are available to enrich the knowledge base of math teachers in the content areas they teach? How can Web resources be used to model effective teaching of specific math content?

Framing The Session Video on demand can be a powerful tool in teacher professional development. We will view one Web site that effectively provides teacher support for mathematics content as well as effective teaching techniques.

Teaching Annenberg Media uses media and telecommunications to advance excellent teaching www.learner.org

Teacher professional development programming for K-12 teachers FREE through our satellite channel and Video On Demand Go Click on “by Discipline” and highlight “Mathematics.” Click on “by Grade” and highlight “6- 8.” Click on “Go.”

Guided Practice Where we are going … Learning Math: Patterns, Functions, and Algebra Gain a better understanding of the mathematics concepts you teach with this video- and Web-based course for K-8 teachers.

A video- and Web-based course on basic concepts of algebra for K-8 teachers:Web-based course Nine half-hour and one one-hour video programs, course guide, and Web site

A video- and Web-based course on basic concepts of algebra for K-8 teacher:Web-based course Nine half-hour and one one-hour video programs, course guide, and Web site Learning Math: Patterns, Functions, and Algebra is the first of five video- and Web-based mathematics courses …fiveWeb-basedcourses

A video- and Web-based course on basic concepts of algebra for K-8 teachers:Web-based course Nine half-hour and one one-hour video programs, course guide, and Web site Learning Math: Patterns, Functions, and Algebra is the first of five video- and Web- based mathematics courses …fiveWeb- basedcourses Patterns, Functions, and Algebra explores the “big ideas” in algebraic thinking, such as finding, describing, and using patterns; using functions to make predictions; understanding linearity and proportional reasoning; understanding non-linear functions; and understanding and exploring algebraic structure. The concluding case studies show you how to apply what you have learned in your own classroom. The course consists of 10 two-and-a-half hour sessions with a half-hour of video programming each, problem-solving activities available in print and on the Web, and class discussions.

Explores the “big ideas” in algebraic thinking: finding, describing, and using patterns using functions to make predictions understanding linearity and proportional reasoning understanding non-linear functions understanding and exploring algebraic structure

The concluding case studies show you how to apply what you have learned in your own classroom.

Work Time

Getting Started We will now view… >Video 6: Solving Equations Look at different strategies for solving equations. Topics include the different meanings attributed to the equal sign, and the strengths and limitations of different models for solving equations. Explore the connection between equality and balance, and practice solving equations by balancing, working backwards, and inverting operations.

Work Time Was Sue-Anne's thinking similar to or different from your own strategy for these problems? Watch the video segment after you have completed the Balance Scale Interactive Activity and compare your strategy with Sue-Anne's. If you get stuck during the activity, you can watch the video segment to help you. Will Sue-Anne's strategy work for any balance puzzle? Will yours? Explain. You can find this segment on the session video, approximately 13 minutes and 31 seconds after the Annenberg Media logo.

In this session we will explore different methods for solving equations. We will: >Learn more about the meaning of the equal sign. >Explore the connection between equality and balance. >Solve equations by balancing, working backwards, and inverting opations. >Explore the strengths and limitations of different models for solving equations >Solve systems of equations.
