Introduction and Anaerobic Respiration pp. 131-135

 A process that converts glucose into energy  Occurs in or near the mitochondria  6 O 2 + C 6 H 12 O 6  6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O + energy

 Path is determined by the presence of oxygen  If O 2 is ABSENT then anaerobic respiration occurs in the cytoplasm.  If O 2 is PRESENT then aerobic respiration occurs in the mitochondrion.

 First step is glycolysis  Occurs in the cytoplasm by the mitochondria  Products: 2 ATP and 2 NADH  Glucose  2 Pyruvic Acids (pyruvate)

 Next Step: Fermentation  The pyruvate is converted into ethyl alcohol or lactic acid  Ex: Wine, Antibiotics, Yeast

Glucose  Pyruvic Acid  ethyl alcohol or lactic acid Alcoholic Fermentation: Conversion to ethyl alcohol + 2 ATP (Ex: yeast)

Lactic Acid Fermentation: Conversion to lactic acid + 2 ATP (Ex: muscles) Glucose  Pyruvic Acid  ethyl alcohol or lactic acid

 Respiration  Anaerobic  Fermentation
