The ‘s of

A Attendance: Simply being at school is the first step to success. It is important to make every attempt to have your child at school daily. If your child misses a day, please make sure to send a note on the following day. At Randolph Howell we observe an uninterrupted Literacy block daily from 8:30 until 10:00. It is crucial for your child to be on time and present. We ask that if you have to schedule a doctor’s appointment, etc. for your child it not be during this time.

B Behavior:

Classroom Rules: K-2 I Can Rules: I can raise my hand to talk. I can be quiet at work time. I can keep my hands and feet to myself. I can walk in the school. I can follow directions.

C Change of Clothes: Please make sure that you child has a change of clothes. When the seasons change, you will need to send in appropriate clothing at that time. These clothes must meet our dress code.

D Daily Folder: Your child will receive a daily folder. It contains information and schoolwork that is very important. A newsletter will be sent out weekly in your child’s folder to also inform you of up coming events the next week. This is one mode of communication between us. Please make sure your child brings their folder to school EVERYDAY!

E Effort: I realize that all children are not going to be on the same level, but I strive to have all the children to make an effort and strive to be the best that they can be.

F Family: We are a family in our classrooms. We strive to make sure each member of our family is being as successful as they can be.

G Grading: Progress reports will go home every 4 ½ weeks indicating whether your child is where he/she should be by this point. Report cards go home every 9 weeks.

H Hugs: Kindergarten teachers love hugs! I think that it is important to show the children that you really care about them!

I Interest: If you are interested in volunteering to help out the classroom this year in any way please let me know. We can always use a helping hand! I would LOVE to have some parents come in and read to the student’s at various times. I am also interested in having a room mom/dad that will be in charge of all the classroom parties/special holidays. Please let me know if you are interested.

J Jump into learning: Kindergarten is the start of your child’s education. I hope that we can all work together and have every child succeed this year! Let’s jump into learning together!

K Know the rules: It is important for all of us to know the rules and to make sure that we are following them at all times. Please make sure to talk to your children about the classroom rules.

L Lunch: Please pay for lunch on Mondays. Make sure that it is in an envelope with your child’s name and their lunch number which will be issued to them. If you send lunch for your child, please make sure that you have their name on the lunch box. We will have a snack each day. You need to provide snack daily for your child. We always have children that do not have snacks. Any additional snacks you could send in to help us out would be greatly appreciated. We will have ice cream on Fridays ONLY! If you wish for your child to have ice cream, you must send $.75 in an envelope with your child’s name and the type of ice cream they would like. Your choices are: chocolate cup, vanilla cup, push-up, or scribbler popsicle.

M Money: At the beginning of the year, there will be money coming in for various supplies and reasons. Please put all money in an envelope with your child’s name, teacher’s name, and the purpose of the money and place it in the pocket of your child’s folder. There will be times throughout the year when money will be coming in for several different things at the same time, such as for a book fair, a field trip, lunch money, a school program, etc. It can get kind of tricky when different sums of money are coming in with no names or labels.

N Naps: Your child needs to bring a mat for naptime. You may also send in a small blanket for them as well. During nap time, your child will be asked to rest, they do not have to sleep (but can). I will also be using this time to perform one on one instruction with the children.

O Ownership: One of my many goals as an educator is to help children to become motivated to learn for learning's sake, not just because it is something they are expected to do. Students are encouraged to learn something new each and every day, and in this way they are taking ownership of their own learning.

P Parent Involvement: I would love for all parents to be involved in the education of their children. This is the start of their education and they will need your help and encouragement. We often have many get togethers or special events happening at school. Please show your child that he/she and school is very important by attending some of these fun school events when possible. Read to your child and have your child read to you every day. Ask your child to tell you what happened at school today. Keeping involved in your child's education will assure a successful school career for him/her.

Q Questions: Please feel free to talk to me anytime you have questions about anything. You can do this in a variety of ways. You can send me a note on the behavior chart, call me at school and leave a message or e- mail me us. Kindergarten teacher’s will provide you with their email address. If you wish to discuss something that will take more than 15 minutes, please call me or e-mail to set up an appointment. I want to be there to help you in any way I can.

R Rewards: We will reward your child with praises every day!

S Sight Words: A sight word is a word that is recognized by quickly looking at it and recognizing it. Sight words are not sounded out. The more sight words a student can recite, the more fluently he/she will read. I encourage you to work on sight words with your child using flashcards.

T Transportation: If there will be any changes in transportation, a note MUST be sent in writing by 2:00 p.m. Place any notes indicating changes in your child’s folder labeled notes, money, etc.

U Understanding: If you ever have any questions or do not understand the way that something has been done, please feel free to contact me at anytime.

V V.I.P: (Very Important Person!) Your child is a VERY Important Person in our classroom!

W Writing: Writing is closely connected to reading. Students use skills that they need to read and apply them to writing. Students also develop creativity through their writing. I encourage you to create a special place in your child's room for writing. Make a special box with crayons, markers, pencils, pens, erasers, stickers, glue, etc... that he/she may use to design and create wonderful stories. Students that write well also read well.

X X-tra Classes: Students will have one special class per day such as technology, physical education, guidance, music class and computer lab. Please be sure that your child wears tennis shoes on the day they have P.E.

Y Year Long Learning and Fun: I am looking forward to working with many of you again and getting to know others. Your child will learn a lot this year and will be sure to have lots of fun in the process.

Z Zooming Through Many Skills: Kindergarten is jam packed with a lot of things to learn. I feel confident that your child will be successful in mastering these many skills if we work together, by keeping in touch and reinforcing these skills at home.

I LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING YOUR CHILD THIS YEAR, AND I KNOW WE WILL HAVE A TERRIFIC SCHOOL YEAR!!!!
