How to support your child with reading

Lots of research suggests that the best way to support your child is: Talking to them as much as possible. Teach Nursery Rhymes Reading Fairytales Singing songs Sharing books together.

Phonics! The latest government research shows that good phonics teaching is the best and fastest way to teach reading and its also important for writing. But what is phonics? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwJx1NSi neE&safe=active Practise saying the sounds together.

Blending We teach children the sounds and they use these to read the words. We sometimes use sound buttons to do this. Let’s practise a few together.

Segmenting We teach children to segment the sounds to write words. We use phoneme frames to support, children write 1 sound on each line. Let’s practise some together.

Guided Reading in Reception Every child now has a yellow reading diary and will be given a guided reading book that they can read to you, this will change every week.
