Circle of Spelling A new approach to spelling
2
Why? Evidence suggests that the traditional methods for teaching spelling are only effective for a small number of children. This system has been used in other schools and has been proved to be extremely effective.
3
What are the differences in this approach? Spellings are personalised; the number of spellings and level of difficulty vary with every child. The words are selected because they is a high likelihood that they will be regularly used by the child. The most important difference is that this approach guides the child to develop INDEPENDENT learning skills.

LEARNING TO LEARN! RESILIENCE RECIPROCITY REFLECTIVENESS RESOURCEFULNESS
5
HOW DOES THIS WORK? 1. Each child has a circle for their spelling. 2. There are three segments to the circle which THE CHILD fills with words. 3. For most children, the first segment will contain 5 words from either the ‘first 300 words’ or age related words which come from the National curriculum The second segment will contain words with patterns- phonics or spelling patterns. The third segment will contain either corrected words from their own work OR words related to their topic.
6
Why use a circle? What will come home? What will happen next? FAQs! What happens if my child comes home with a word they have spelt wrongly? How will we know it’s working?
7
How can we help? Children need to learn their spellings as often as possible developing and using their own preferred learning style. The four Rs are the Key!
