5.2 – Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring (Day 1) Algebra 2

Objectives Review distributive property (FOIL) Factor quadratic trinomials with a GCF (greatest common factor) Factor quadratic trinomials with a = 0 Factor quadratic trinomials with a ≠ 0

Remember FOIL? F = First terms O = Outer terms I = Inner terms L = Last terms What is the opposite of distributing?

Factoring with a = 1 There are three main steps to factoring with a = 1: 1.Put the equation in standard form. 2.Factor out the GCF. a)Look at the coefficients and ask yourself: “Which number goes into all of my coefficients?” b)Look at the variables and ask yourself: “What is the most I can pull out of each term?” 3.Factor the remaining polynomial. a)Find numbers the multiply to c, and add up to b.

As a Class… Factor the trinomial, if possible.

In Your Pairs… Factor the trinomial, if possible.

Factoring with a ≠ 1 There are eight main steps to factoring with a ≠ 1: 1.Put the equation in standard form. 2.Factor out the GCF. 3.Multiply a and c. 4.Find the factors of this ac that add up to b. 5.Rewrite the middle term by using these factors. 6.Put parenthesis around the first two and last two terms with a “+” in the middle. 7.Factor out a GCF from each binomial. 8.Set up the final answer. SPLITTING THE MIDDLE TERM

As a Class… Factor the trinomial, if possible.

In Your Pairs… Factor the trinomial, if possible. Cannot be factored

Challenge Problem Factor the trinomial, if possible.

Objectives Review factoring quadratic trinomials with a = 0 and a ≠ 0 Solve quadratic equations Discover special products

How Would We Factor…? What if I added…? Whenever the quadratic equations have an “equal” sign, they can be solved by factoring first!

Solving Quadratic Equations Zeros/Solutions: the numbers which make a quadratic equation equal to zero Set each factor equal to zero! The zeros/solutions of the quadratic equation are x = -2 and x = 4.

Solving Quadratic Equations Solve the quadratic equation, if possible.

Look for a Pattern… Solve the quadratic equation by factoring.

Difference of Squares Recognizing this setup will allow you to factor these problems quicker! Note: This rule only works if the terms are perfect squares! Factor:

Perfect Square Trinomials Factor:

Exit Slip Solve the quadratic equation, if possible. 1) 2) 3) Rate your understanding of this lesson on the following 1-5 scale: (1 = I’m lost … 2 = This is tough … 3 = This is okay … 4 = I’m getting better … 5 = This is easy)
