2 Basic Definitions of Capacitors The role of a capacitor is to hold electric charge. The most simple capacitor consists of two parallel plates. The capacitor is therefore often given the following symbol:

3 Basic Definitions of Capacitors A capacitor is charged by applying a potential difference across it. A potential difference (V) forms across the two plates due to the imbalance in charge. + - electrons leave this plate electrons arrive at this plate +Q -Q An equilibrium is met when the potential difference across the battery matches that across the plates. The more charge on the plates at this time, the larger the capacitor’s capacitance. [C] = CV -1 = F (farad)
