IEEE 802.11 standards (Wireless LANs) Presented by Danu Hunskunatai

IEEE 802.11 standards (Wireless LANs) Definitions : 802.11 & Wi-Fi Advantages and Disadvantages Wireless Communication: Methods Compare IEEE Standards Future : Standards & security

What is IEEE 802.11 IEEE 802.11 is the specification standard for WLANs. Transmission via unlicensed radio spectrum for infrastructure networks or ad-hoc networks.

What is Wi-Fi Wi-Fi means “Wireless Fidelity”. Wi-Fi Alliance organization gives Wi-Fi certified logo. Wi-Fi technologies based on IEEE 802.11b standards.

Wireless Advantages Portability & Mobility – easy to move Flexibility & Scalability – can add computer Cost of Ownership – no cable maintenance

Wireless Disadvantages Uses a lot of battery power Throughput (Speed) – Speed & feed Transmission range – Limited (150 feet) Cost – Now, more expensive than wire equipment Security – Hackers can access

Wireless communication method Infrared (IR) : inexpensive, but human can interfere Microwave : longer range (30 Miles), but atmospheric condition can disrupt Radio Frequency (RF) : short range (150 feet) but less interference DSSS – Restore data w/o retransmission FHSS – Easy to build OFDM – carry a large volume of data
