1 CATHY JONES Secondary Math Instruction Specialist Center for Mathematics and Science Education Arkansas NASA Education Resource Center 346 N. West Avenue, Room 202 Fayetteville, Arkansas 72701 (479) 575-3875 (479) 575-5680 (FAX) e-mail: cej001@uark.edu http://www.uark.edu/~k12 info/

2 Strand: Geometry Standard 9: Transformation of Shapes (Symmetry, Reflection, Translation) Shapes with Line Symmetry have a line or a fold that makes two reflecting parts. Looking at symmetrical sides, each side will look exactly the same and each point will have a corresponding reflection point on the other side.

3 Tape a green pipe cleaner on the fold, as the stem of the leaf. Tape four or six of these leaves to a paper towel cylinder or rolled piece of brown card stock paper. Talk about the symmetry of having the same amount of leaves on both sides of the tree. Copy this template on green paper where it can be folded on the dotted line. Cut around the pattern on the solid lines…DO NOT cut on the dotted line. Unfold the paper to see the finished palm leaf. Discuss the symmetry seen with the two identical sides. Print slide 33 for student use.

4 Strand: Geometry Standard 9: Transformation of Shapes (Symmetry, Reflection, Translation) Shapes with Line Symmetry have a line or a fold that makes two reflecting parts. Looking at symmetrical sides, each side will look exactly the same and each point will have a corresponding reflection point on the other side.

5 Take the butterfly pattern and fold on its LINE OF SYMMETRY. Open it back up and paint on one side of the fold (ONLY), using whatever patterns you desire. While the paint is wet, fold on the previous fold and see what happens. You should have identical points of reflection on both sides.

6 Strand: Geometry Standard 10: Coordinate Geometry Strand: Number & Operation Standard 1: Number Sense There are many colorful flowers in the Rain Forest…Orange, Red, Purple, Pink, Yellow, White, Blue and many others. Read the clue cards and work in groups to place them in the proper order. There is more than one order that will work. Print slides 33-37 for student use.

7 What color is a flower? Red of course…or sometimes white. Did you know that flowers can come in many, many colors? They can be orange, or yellow, or purple. Some may be pink or even blue. In this story we will find 7 different flower colors. Put the flowers in the correct order along the river bank in the rain forest. The orange flower is a very common color. It should be placed somewhere in front of the blue flower. Put the flowers in the correct order along the river bank in the rain forest.

8 The blue flower is a very beautiful and can be found in the middle of the flowers along the river bank. Put the flowers in the correct order along the river bank in the rain forest. The pink flower is also a very common color. It can be found between the purple and blue flowers. Put the flowers in the correct order along the river bank in the rain forest.

9 The purple and yellow flowers are neither first nor last along the river bank. Put the flowers in the correct order along the river bank in the rain forest. A white flower is more unusual, but there are some beautiful white one in the Rain Forest. It is not one of the middle five along the river bank. Put the flowers in the correct order along the river bank in the rain forest.

10 The red flowers are very bright and a red one is found along this river bank immediately after the yellow one. Put the flowers in the correct order along the river bank in the rain forest. When you are finished identify the color of the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh flowers.

11 From GEMS Frog Math Put no more than 20 frogs in a container. Student estimate the number of frogs, write the estimated number on a sticky note and place it on the board. Compare and order and discuss the numbers. Determine the highest and lowest. All others estimated their numbers to be BETWEEN these. Strand: Number & Operation…Strand: Number Sense Strand: Measurement…Standard 12: Physical Attributes Strand: Data Analysis & Probability…Standard 14: Data Representation Standard 15: Data Analysis…Standard 16: Inferences & Predictions Print slide 38 for student use.

12 How can we find the actual number? Empty the jar. Count the frogs on a place value board, putting a group of ten in a cup to place it on the tens side. Compare the estimate to the actual number and discuss.

13 Extension: If your frogs are different solid colors you can record the count by color. Use sticky notes to make a bar graph on the board of each group’s numbers. Discuss the data. Student 1 Student 2Student 3Student 4 Student 5 Example graph & repeat for each color

Strand: Measurement…Standard: Systems of Measurement 14 Most animals sleep at night, just like you. What time do you go to bed? Set that time on the clock. Use an analog clock and a digital one. Discuss the different times the students have set. Use the big clock hands and hour and minute cards from AIMS It’s About Time to show the times. Discuss the hidden numbers. Compare the different times and see how much later or earlier one is than the other. There are not a lot of people in the Rain Forest and they do not have many meetings or special things to do, so you might not think TIME is important. But the animals and plants do different things at different times of the day. Print slide 39 for student use and see slide 40 for example of digital clock.

15 Make individual digital clocks, shown here, using ½ sheet of construction paper and number cards. All should be laminated. Fasten with zip ties. Giant digital clocks can be made using numbers on full sheets of paper. Each stack can be attached with rings and a dowel rod slid through, so that it can be held and flipped. Cards should be laminated. For a giant analog clock make full size numbers 1-12 on red paper and 5, 10, 15…60 on blue paper. Put strings through so that they can hang around the neck. Use 2 dowels, different lengths, short one red and long one blue. Students stand in a circle with numbers one person in the middle with the hands.

16 The animals are under the trees, taking an afternoon nap. Is the time 9:00 or 1:00? ______________ Show that time on the clock. It is 10 o’clock in the morning in the Rain Forest. Is it daylight or dark? ___________ Show that time on the clock. It is 11:00 at night. Which animal would be awake? Circle the right answer. Show that time on the clock. Monkeys Bats The sun has just begun to shine and the animals are feeding their babies. Is the time 7:00 or 2:00? ______________ Show that time on the clock. NAME: ____________________ Use RED for the hour hand and BLUE for the minute hand.
