2. 2 Strand: Geometry Standard 9: Transformation of Shapes (Symmetry, Reflection, Translation) Shapes with Line Symmetry have a line or a fold that makes two reflecting parts. Looking at symmetrical sides, each side will look exactly the same and each point will have a corresponding reflection point on the other side.

3. 3 Tape a green pipe cleaner on the fold, as the stem of the leaf. Tape four or six of these leaves to a paper towel cylinder or rolled piece of brown card stock paper. Talk about the symmetry of having the same amount of leaves on both sides of the tree. Copy this template on green paper where it can be folded on the dotted line. Cut around the pattern on the solid lines…DO NOT cut on the dotted line. Unfold the paper to see the finished palm leaf. Discuss the symmetry seen with the two identical sides. 5. 5 Take the butterfly pattern and fold on its LINE OF SYMMETRY. Open it back up and paint on one side of the fold (ONLY), using whatever patterns you desire. While the paint is wet, fold on the previous fold and see what happens. You should have identical points of reflection on both sides.

Read the clue cards and work in groups to place them in the proper order. There is more than one order that will work. Print slides 33-37 for student use.

7. 7 What color is a flower? Red of course…or sometimes white. Did you know that flowers can come in many, many colors? They can be orange, or yellow, or purple. Some may be pink or even blue. In this story we will find 7 different flower colors. Put the flowers in the correct order along the river bank in the rain forest. The orange flower is a very common color. It should be placed somewhere in front of the blue flower. Put the flowers in the correct order along the river bank in the rain forest.

8. 8 The blue flower is a very beautiful and can be found in the middle of the flowers along the river bank. Put the flowers in the correct order along the river bank in the rain forest. 11. 11 From GEMS Frog Math Put no more than 20 frogs in a container. Student estimate the number of frogs, write the estimated number on a sticky note and place it on the board. Compare and order and discuss the numbers. Determine the highest and lowest. All others estimated their numbers to be BETWEEN these. 12. 12 How can we find the actual number? Empty the jar. Count the frogs on a place value board, putting a group of ten in a cup to place it on the tens side. Compare the estimate to the actual number and discuss.

14. Strand: Measurement…Standard: Systems of Measurement 14 Most animals sleep at night, just like you. What time do you go to bed? Set that time on the clock. Use an analog clock and a digital one. Discuss the different times the students have set. Use the big clock hands and hour and minute cards from AIMS It’s About Time to show the times. Discuss the hidden numbers. Compare the different times and see how much later or earlier one is than the other. There are not a lot of people in the Rain Forest and they do not have many meetings or special things to do, so you might not think TIME is important. But the animals and plants do different things at different times of the day. Print slide 39 for student use and see slide 40 for example of digital clock.

15. 15 Make individual digital clocks, shown here, using ½ sheet of construction paper and number cards. All should be laminated. Fasten with zip ties. Giant digital clocks can be made using numbers on full sheets of paper. Each stack can be attached with rings and a dowel rod slid through, so that it can be held and flipped. Cards should be laminated. For a giant analog clock make full size numbers 1-12 on red paper and 5, 10, 15…60 on blue paper. Put strings through so that they can hang around the neck. Use 2 dowels, different lengths, short one red and long one blue. Students stand in a circle with numbers one person in the middle with the hands.
