All learners need your energy, your heart, and your mind. How they need you, however, differs. Unless we understand and respond to those differences, we fail many learners!” Carol Ann Tomlinson Where do we begin? 4 Steps of Differentiated Planning 1.Pre-Assessment 2.Content 3.Process 4.Product/Assessment
3
Pre-Assessment Knowing the Learner Achievement Level TCAP Scores Discovery Education Benchmarks Other Assessment Data Learning Styles/ Multiple Intelligences How does each student effectively learn and retain information. See attached resources http://daretodifferentiate.wikispaces.com http://daretodifferentiate.wikispaces.com/file/view/Learner_Profile.pdf http://www.ncwiseowl.org/kscope/techknowpark/LoopCoaster/eSmartz1.html http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=3747026 Pre-Assessment Prior to Each Lesson To determine level of student retention of previous lesson/lessons To measure prior knowledge of topic http://daretodifferentiate.wikispaces.com/file/view/Pre- assessment+Techniques+Chart.pdf

Content What the student needs to learn and how the learner will get access to the information Provision of organizers to guide note-taking http://www.readwritethink.org http://www.eduplace.com/graphicorganizer http://freeology.com/graphicorgs Present in visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modes See attached resources

Use of examples and illustrations based on student interest and real world application www.RealWorldMath.org (5-12) http://www.mathmovesu.com (5-8) (Raytheon's MathMovesU program is an innovative initiative designed to engage middle school students in math by illustrating the connection between math, their passions and interests and “cool” careers.) http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/experiments.html (K-8) http://www.edheads.org/activities/eng_cell (4-12) http://illuminations.nctm.org/Activities.aspx?grade=1 (K-12) www.RealWorldMath.orghttp://www.mathmovesu.com http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/experiments.htmlhttp://www.edheads.org/activities/eng_cellhttp://illuminations.nctm.org/Activities.aspx?grade=1

Process The standard is not negotiable, but the road to it is. Provide access to a variety of materials which target different learning preferences and reading abilities. Develop activities that target auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners. Establish stations for inquiry-based, independent learning activities. Create activities that vary in level of complexity and degree of abstract thinking required. Use flexible grouping to group and regroup students based on factors including content, ability, and assessment results (Below Basic, Basic, Proficient, Advanced) http://www.protopage.com/karenpeterson#Menus/Notes (K-3) Tiered, Learning Style, Interest Activities http://daretodifferentiate.wikispaces.com Scroll down to strategies. Choice Boards (Tic-Tac-Toe Menus, Think-Tac-Toes, Learning Menus, Extension Menus) Flexible grouping, Interest Centers, Tiering, Use of Technology(K-12)
7
Product/Assessment The product is essentially what the student produces at the end of the lesson to demonstrate the mastery of content. Tests, Evaluations, Projects, Reports, Rubric, Portfolio, Benchmark Testing, Discovery Education Probes, Exit Tickets http://www.sabine.k12.la.us/vrschool/assessment.htm http://www.rmcdenver.com/useguide/assessme/definiti.htm
