Measuring Temperature Temperature is measured using a maximum and minimum thermometer in degrees Celsius ( º C)
3
Measuring Precipitation Precipitation is all the types of moisture naturally deposited on the earth ’ s surface. Precipitation is collected using a rain gauge and is measured in millimetres (mm).
4
Measuring Sunshine The amount of sunshine is measured using a sunshine recorder. The amount of sunshine is measured in hours. How do you think this works?
5
Recording Sunshine We record sunshine on the strip of paper behind the glass ball.
6
Measuring wind speed What is this instrument? It is an anemometer We use an anemometer to measure wind speed.
7
Measuring wind direction We use the compass points to decide which direction the wind is coming from. We always describe where the wind is coming from. We use a wind vane to measure wind direction.
8
Where is the best place to put a thermometer? A Stevenson Screen is a wooden box built to put the thermometers in. It gives a more accurate temperature reading. Why do think this is?
10
Anticyclones High Pressure This brings clear calm weather. In an anticyclone winds move clockwise. Winter anticyclones bring cold, clear, dry weather, often with fog in the morning. Summer anticyclones Bring hot, dry weather. This brings cloudy, wet, windy weather. The wind moves anti- clockwise. Depressions always have weather fronts attached to them. Fronts mean rain! Depressions Low Pressure

Study the reference diagram above. a) Describe in detail the weather conditions being experienced over the British Isles. KU 4 b)“On Friday there will be frost overnight and Saturday will start dry with sunny periods and light winds before clouding over in the afternoon.” (Glasgow Weather Centre) Explain the changes that the weather forecasters believe will take place during Friday and Saturday. You must refer to the synoptic chart. KU 3 3.

A RECORDING CARD FROM A SUNSHINE RECORDER 1. Look at the diagram above. a)At what time of day did the sun first start shining? b)For how many hours did the sun shine altogether? KU 2

WEATHER MAPS OF THE BRITISH ISLES 2. a) Look at the diagrams above and answer this question by copying the sentences given and then saying whether each one is either true or false. The south of Britain is colder than the north in summer. The west coast is colder in winter than the east coast. The west coast is wetter than the east coast. ES 3
15
Questions 1.Why do you get more rain on the West coast of Britain than on the East? 2.Why is it warmer in the South East of the UK than in the North West during the summer? 3.What kind of rainfall is most common on the West Coast, explain.
16
CHANGES IN AIR PRESSURE 2. b) Look at the weather map above. It shows two weather fronts. Name the types of front at X and Y on the map. KU 2

3. c) Which of the following station circles is most likely to be a summary of the weather at Aberdeen at 1200 hrs on 31 st August 1991? Explain your choice of station circle. ES 4
