SWBAT: Use context clues to determine a word’s meaning.

Vocab 4: 1. stringent (adj) 1. The ACT is very stringent about its rules and regulations, and if everything is not perfectly in order, the test will be voided. 2. lurid (adj) 1. Though health warnings sometimes try to use photographs to shock viewers into not wanting to try a product, sometimes they become overly lurid and show pictures that no one wants to see, like the teeth of someone who uses meth. 3. scurrilous (adj) 1. I could not believe the scurrilous talk that was running rampant; usually gossip is said without harmful intent, but these rumors were clearly trying to hurt someone.

4. querulous (adj) 4. When the students become querulous over how much homework they have, bringing it up to their teachers every day, the teachers start to go crazy with how much whining is going on and almost want to give more. 5. caveat (n) 4. The pound sold the puppy to the couple with the caveat that the puppy was not potty-trained yet and would need some work. 6. autonomy (N) 4. By the time you are a senior, you should have more autonomy in being responsible for your own work rather than having teachers chase you down to complete assignments. 7. precept (N) 4. It was a precept of the Puritans to believe that holidays should not be celebrated because they are not in the Bible.

8. brusque (adj) 8. Jamie was nervous about talking to her boss because he could be brusque, only ever giving her two minutes of his time and seeming like he had a million other things more important to do than speak with her. 9. vicarious (adj) 8. Though Katie couldn’t go to the Justin Bieber concert herself, she could gain vicarious happiness through her friends’ pictures and videos that they texted to her from it. 10. disconcerted (adj) 8. Sarah became disconcerted when Sam claimed that Abby was lying, as Sarah had thought that herself but didn’t want to admit it.

Dramas are meant to be performed… YOU will be ACTING!! WOO HOO! You are assigned to a group to do a certain section of Act II– you must do a good job (we are not reading it together) Requirements: “Translate” your section into modern-day English (how we would speak today) Create a script that you will hand in Every person needs a role Performance should be mostly memorized and well-rehearsed You may use props (not required)

Timeline: Today: Read the section you’re assigned to, choose characters and assign a script-writer Tomorrow: Work on translating the script into modern-day English Wednesday: Finish translating and rehearse Next Monday: Due– bring in finalized script and we will start performing.

HW: Vocab 5 (due Wednesday) Outside reading reflection #2 (due Wednesday) Finish reading your section if you weren’t able to EXIT: Give Ms. Stitt a one-sentence summary about what happens in your assigned section.
