Function and Environmental Impact The Law of the Sea Convention defines the rights and responsibilities of nations in their use of the world's oceans, establishing guidelines for businesses, the environment, and the management of marine natural resources. This protects fish stocks, regulates mineral resources offshore, and provides pollution control for the oceans. Aids in preventing ‘tragedy of the commons’ by holding countries responsible for communal waterways.
