What Is Plagiarism? Is copying just a sentence or two without crediting a source plagiarism? Is it OK to paraphrase what another has written without correctly citing the author? Is it OK to use information or ideas without crediting the source if the exact words are not used? Can you use parts of a friend's paper as your own if he or she says it's OK?

 Quotations must…  Be identical to the original  Use a narrow segment of the source  Match the source document word for word  Be attributed to the original author

 Involves putting a passage from source material into your own words  Paraphrased material must also be attributed to the source  A paraphrase is usually shorter than the original passage

 Involves putting the main idea(s) into your own words, including only the main points  Summaries must also be attributed to the source  Summaries are significantly shorter than the original and give a broad overview of the source material

Book / Website / Class notes: use the author’s last name. ***Cite plot references AND direct quotes.*** The book The Hunger Games is written by Suzanne Collins: In The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen literally faces life-or-death scenarios as she attempts to win her country’s annual competition (Collins).

Information about / definitions of the archetypes themselves should come from the sources provided; this information comes from our class notes: Though the trickster himself may not change, the world around him changes as a result of what he does (Bennett).

Cite the director’s last name. The movie Night of the Living Dead was directed by George Romero: In Night of the Living Dead, no explanation is ever given for the dead returning to life; instead, the focus is on a small band of survivors (Romero).

Definition of the “sage” archetype: “The sage is a wise or holy figure who guides the hero and who can appear as an oracle, a mentor, guide, or teacher.” Source: “Archetypes in Modern Mythology” by Dominic Sagolla Using quotes in your paper

In his article “Archetypes in Modern Mythology,” Dominic Sagolla states, “The sage is a wise or holy figure who guides the hero and who can appear as an oracle, a mentor, a guide or teacher.”

Like other examples of sage archetype, such as Merlin and Gandalf, Dumbledore is “a wise or holy figure who guides the hero...” (Sagolla).

Dumbledore is an excellent example of the sage archetype because he is wise advisor that provides the hero with advice during difficult circumstances (Sagolla).

The call to adventure definition: “The call to adventure is the point in a person's life when he is first given notice that everything is going to change, whether he knows it or not.” Source: “The Hero’s Journey: Summary of the Steps” from Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces Create each of the following: 1. A “somebody said” quote integration 2. A blended quote integration 3. A paraphrase

 Somebody Said In The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Joseph Campbell wrote, “The call to adventure is the point in a person’s life when he is first given notice that everything is going to change.”  Blended When a character receives the call to adventure, he must realize that “everything is going to change, whether he knows it or not” (Campbell).  Paraphrase The call to adventure marks a shift in the character’s reality, even if he does not realize it (Campbell).
