Heat (PS 1-2) 1. I can define temperature as the measurement of thermal energy and describe the way it is measured. 2. I can trace how thermal energy can transfer from one object to another by conduction.
3
All matter contains thermal energy. The more matter in a substance, the more thermal energy it contains.
4
Heat is the transfer of thermal energy between two objects of different temperatures. Heat is the result of molecules vibrating quickly. Heat is moving energy. Thermal energy always moves from warmer to cooler objects.

6
Temperature is how fast the particles are moving in a substance. measure how quickly particles are moving with a thermometer faster moving particles = higher temperature slower moving particles = lower temperature
8
Difference Between Heat and Temperature
9
So, what’s the difference? For there to be heat energy, there must be movement of thermal energy between substances of different temperatures. Temperature is a measure of how fast the particles in a substance are moving. In other words, how hot or cold something is. All matter has thermal energy. The slower the particles are moving, the lower the temperature. The faster they are moving, the higher the temperature. A substance can have a lot of heat, but not a lot of thermal energy. (Example, a match is hot but a larger block of ice has more thermal energy simply because it has more matter.
10
Thermal Energy can be transferred! Conduction This is the transfer from one object to another by direct contact. The eggs are cooked because the pan transfers energy directly to the eggs.
11
Convection This is the transfer of thermal energy thought the movement of a gas or liquid. The heat from the stove transfers to the pot by conduction. Then the water is heated by convection.
12
Radiation This is the transfer of energy by waves that move through space. This is how the sun is able to heat the earth even though it is millions of miles away. Unlike convection, radiation does not need matter for the heat to travel though.
13
Conductors are materials that transfer heat easily. Examples: metals like copper and gold
14
An insulator is a material that does not transfer heat easily. Examples: –A jacket
