Wrapping Up Project 1 and Introducing Project 2
2
Project 1 Reflection Think about your writing process for this essay. How was it different than writing assignments you have written in the past? How was it the same? Has anything changed about your writing process? How did you get started on your essay? Did you procrastinate? Did that help you or hurt you? What was easiest for you about the process? What was the most difficult?

Analyzing and Exploring Places and Spaces During this project, we will be reading and writing about how certain places and spaces can be deeply connected cultures, communities, and social issues. For this project, you will choose a real place/space to analyze. You will research your place, visit and observe your place, and finally write an essay examining the connection between your chosen place and the community or subculture it is connected to.
7
From Your Textbook: For this Project, we will be focusing our analysis on Places and Spaces and how they connect to cultures and society. This is the kind of analysis commonly found in majors like Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology—even Criminal Justice! Any major that studies human groups. Let’s take a look at how your textbook suggests how you might analyze these kinds of texts: Page 51 – Analyzing Cultural Rituals and Spaces Pages 176, 177, and 178 – Overview of Text Selections

Review Project Two Prompt Read the Project Two: Exploring Cultural Spaces prompt. Please think of at least one question to ask about the prompt after we read it.

Examples of Successful Projects from Previous Semesters Note how each of these thesis connects the place/space to the community in a significant way: The Buddhist Temple of Northridge provides community and religious connection for Sri Lankan Buddhists. The Southern California Renaissance Faire provides both community and livelihood for the “Faire Folk” subculture of craftsmen, performers, and artists. Chinese American Live Poultry, the last poultry slaughterhouse in Los Angeles, is important to Los Angeles’s Asian immigrant community for significant cultural reasons and should not be shut down. CSUN’s “green initiatives” programs and eco-conscious spaces have encouraged students and faculty to be more eco-conscious. Murals and street art in Boyle-Heights represent Chicano culture in Los Angeles and are an art form and cultural heritage that should be protected. RED = The Place/Space PURPLE = the community/culture/subculture
