2. The science lab can be an interesting and fun place to learn. It’s a special classroom with many different types of equipment and materials. Some of those things can be dangerous if not handled carefully. Today, we are going to review/discuss some basic rules that must be followed to keep you safe in the lab.

10. Smelling chemicals in the lab can be dangerous. What do you think may happen if you sniff a dangerous chemical?

14. With your table group, discuss the lab scene on your notes page. Identify and explain the rules that are being broken and write them in the box. Some boxes may have more than one rule inside.

16.  Goggles are used to protect eyes during activities involving chemicals, fumes, moving objects, heat, and/or glass.

17. A fire extinguisher is used to put out small fires. There are four steps for using a fire extinguisher. P = Pull the Pin A = Aim the Nozzle at the base of the fire S = Squeeze the handle S= Sweep from side to side

18. Fire blankets can be used to extinguish fires on people, objects, or small areas. To use:  Remove the blanket its container  Hold the fire blanket with your hands wrapped in the top edge of the blanket.  Cover the flames completely and leave until fire goes out.  If the fire is on a person, wrap the person and roll/pat the blanket until the fire goes out.  Allow the blanket to cool for 30 minutes to an hour.

19.  In the science lab, aprons are used to protect skin and clothing from dangerous materials and stains.

20. When chemicals are splashed into eyes:  Immediately flush eyes for at least 15 minutes  Keep the eyes open and rotate the eyeballs in all directions to remove contamination from around the eyes.  Seek medical attention immediately

21. The safety shower is used to rinse away chemicals that have been spilled on clothing or skin.  Yell to get teacher’s attention  Pull handle to turn on shower  Remove contaminated clothing  Remain in the water for 15-20 minutes (minimum)  Have someone call 911  Inform medical help of what you were exposed to

22.  Gloves protect hands from chemicals, heat, and sharp objects

23. Choose & complete activities from the menu. Be sure to add up the point values so that you are working toward a grade that works for you. You must complete a minimum of 75 points worth of activities.
