3 Proper Disposal of contaminated items Regulated Waste Regulated waste is any waste possibly contaminated with blood or OPIM including contaminated sharps (P&I 200-2, 12.0) The price of disposal of regulated waste is so expensive; it has been noted that many items are non-contaminated. Non-contaminated items may go into the general trash. Next time you go to dispose of disposable medical supplies or PPE – ask this question – is this item truly contaminated? Example: gloves. Just because you put them on, does not automatically deem them contaminated. 4 Proper disposal sites Biohazard waste containers Available at all stations in apparatus bay area. Biohazard Bags – Two options for disposal of biohazard bags »1) Placed in the hospitals regulated waste container »2) Placed in the regulated waste container in the apparatus room of each station. Sharps Containers »Full sharps containers shall be placed in the biohazard waste receptacle in the station. Do not drop them off at the hospitals. 6 Reporting Requirements Immediately report all infectious & hazardous materials exposures to Dispatch by radio or telephone.
