Lab Safety Conestoga Valley Middle School 8 th Grade Science
2
Lab Safety Science labs are exciting because we can see results, and this helps us to understand the concepts we are studying. We need to exercise caution when doing experiments. The following rules will prepare you for a safe year in the lab. Read them carefully, make sure you understand them, and ask questions if there is a rule you do not understand.
3
General Rules
4
Before you begin working, read the experiment several times. Follow directions exactly as they are written. Always ask your teacher if you are in doubt about any of the procedures.
5
General Rules Eating, drinking, or chewing gum during labs is not permitted.
6
Where are the Safety goggles?
7
General Rules Safety goggles are required. You must wear goggles whenever you are working with chemicals or burners. On scheduled lab days, it would be good to wear eyeglasses instead of your contact lenses.
8
General Rules Tie back long hair and bangs to keep hair away from chemicals or flame sources. Remove or tie back jewelry or articles of clothing that can touch chemicals or flame sources while you are working.
9
General rules When you complete an experiment, clean up your work area and return all equipment to its proper place. Wash your hands when you are finished.
10
General Rules The laboratory is not a place to fool around, it is too dangerous to do so. Misconduct could result in detention.
11
First Aid
12
Report all accidents, no matter how minor, to your teacher immediately. Listen carefully to instructions given at the beginning of each lab to learn what to do in the case of specific accidents
13
Where is the … FIRE EXTINGUISHER?
14
First Aid Know where the safety equipment is located. Use the safety equipment only in an emergency.
15
Heating & Fire Safety
16
Again, always wear safety goggles when using a heat source. Never heat chemicals unless you are instructed to do so. A chemical that is harmless when cool could be dangerous when heated
17
Heating & Fire Safety Keep your work area clear and keep materials away from flames. Never reach across a flame. Make sure test tubes are pointed away from you or others. Chemicals could splash or boil out.
18
Heating & Fire Safety Never heat a liquid in a closed container; the expanding gas could cause the container to explode. Use clamps or tongs to pick up heated containers.
19
Heating & Fire Safety The burner stands, rings, and other metal parts get extremely hot during lab experiments. Use heat resistant gloves and care when dismantling the lab station.
20
Chemical & Glass Safety
21
Be careful to avoid spills. If a spill does occur, ask about specific clean-up procedures. Never simply pour chemicals into the sink or trash container. Do not “mix” chemicals unless you are instructed to do so.
22
Chemical & Glass Safety Never taste or inhale chemicals. Many are poisonous. Always pour acids into water.
23
Chemical & Glass Safety When inserting glass tubing into a rubber stopper, use glycerin and a towel. Always use a turning motion. Never force the glass into the stopper.
24
Chemical & Glass Safety Remember, use clamps or tongs to handle glassware that has been heated. Clean glassware before putting it away.
25
Chemical & Glass Safety Your lab station will be checked at the end of each lab. Make sure all equipment is clean and neat and the bench top has been wiped down.
26
Chemical & Glass Safety Students will be expected to pay for glassware that has been broken due to misuse or carelessness.
