LABORATORY SAFETY

General Laboratory Rules No rough play or practical jokes. Do only the experiments and activities assigned by your teacher. Follow instructions exactly as given by your teacher. Do not wear loose clothing, long chains or bracelets or open-toed shoes. Tie back long hair. Report any accident immediately to your teacher. Keep your work area and equipment clean. Wear your goggles, aprons and other safety equipment at all times. Check label on containers carefully before removing any of their contents. Do not remove anything from lab. Clean up any spills immediately. Always work with a partner in labs. Do not work alone. Stay out of storage areas unless you are instructed to be there by your teacher. Never eat or drink while in the lab room.

Glassware Safety Never used broken or chipped glassware. Never heat glassware that is not thoroughly dry. Never pick up any glassware unless you are sure it is not hot. If it is hot, use heat-resistant gloves. Always clean glassware before putting it away.

Fire Safety Never heat anything unless instructed to do so. Never heat anything in a closed container. Never reach across a flame. Always use a clamp, tongs or heat resistant gloves to handle hot objects. Always maintain a clean work area. Locate Fire Extinguisher

Chemical Safety Never smell any chemical directly from its container and only when instructed to do so. Never mix chemicals unless instructed to do so. Never touch or taste any chemical unless instructed to do so. Keep all lids closed when chemicals are not in use. Dispose of chemicals as instructed by your teacher. Immediately rinse with water any chemicals that get on your skin or clothes, then notify teacher. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap after each activity.

Eye and Face Safety When using chemicals or heating objects you must wear safety goggles. When you are heating a test tube or bottle, always point it away from yourself and others. Locate Eye Wash Station

Sharp Instrument Safety Always use single edged razors. Handle all sharp instruments with extreme caution. Never cut any material toward you; always cut away from you. Immediately notify your teacher if your skin is cut. Put any broken sharp instrument, including broken glass, in the broken glass container not in the trash. Do not come in contact with anyone else’s blood. Locate First Aid Kit

Electrical Safety Never use long extension cords to plug in any electrical devise. Do not plug too many appliances into one socket or you may overload the socket and cause a fire. Never touch an electrical appliance or outlet with wet hands. Do not insert any object into an outlet except a plug.
