Fetal Pig Dissection

Learning Objectives To identification the location and function of the organ systems in a mammal (fetal pig). Compare the anatomy of a human to that of a fetal pig. To practice dissection techniques.

Why Dissect a Animals? Adds to our educational experience. We get to see what we have been talking about in class. Doctors, veterinarians, scientists dissect animals to learn more about them… They use this information to help animals (i.e. those who are sick). Where Did They Come From? MMMMother pigs that were slaughtered for food. TTTThe fetal pigs were preserved for scientific study instead of being thrown away, which would be simply a waste.

Safety DDDDo not touch the materials unless directed to do so. KKKKeep dissection tools out of people’s faces. KKKKnow where all your body part are… Not knowing can result in a cut or an amputated finger. NNNNO FOOLING Around LLLLISTEN to everything Ms. S says…do NOT move ahead in the lab.

Clean-Up When you are finished with the lab make sure you clean ALL the lab materials properly (put pig remains in plastic bag, show Ms. S the remains before you dispose of them in the trash can, use soap and water to clean materials). Wash your hands with soap and water. Make sure your lab station looks better than when it did when you got to it.
