1 Emissivity and Dielectric Properties Allie, Tameka, Joey, Sam, Brandon

2 Lesson Preparation  Met with Mrs. Moran to discuss the lesson and dates for our presentation  Observed Mrs. Skiles’ class  A thorough lesson plan was made  The lesson plan was revised a few times before it was finalized  A worksheet and a word search puzzle was made for our lesson

3 The Day of the Presentation  Met in front of the school at 7:15 A.M.  Set up stations in the classroom with necessary materials and station signs  We had 4 stations. There was one person at each station.  Joey was the time-keeper and main speaker.

6 Demonstration: Used to demonstrate dielectric properties We put Christmas lights in a bowl of water and microwaved it. The lights lit up without being plugged into a power source

7 Station 1: Infrared Camera  We informed the students of the relationship between the apparent temperature on the camera and the emissivity of that object.  We let them put their hands behind a black trash bag and white piece of paper.  After the experiment, they concluded that the black trash bag shows more heat than the white piece of paper due to a blackbody having a higher emissivity.

8 Station 2: Dielectric Properties Microwaving Solutions The students came up with a hypothesis about which solution would be hottest 3 different solutions were microwaved for the same amount of time (salt water, sugar water, regular water) The students measured and recorded the temperatures of the solutions We also introduced the idea of experimental error at this particular station

9 Station 3: Dielectric Properties Circuit/Diode We explained electrical conductors and insulators along with positive and negative terminals. Putting the negative/positive part of the diode into the negative/positive terminal made LED light turn green. If we switched it, the light turned red.

10 Station 4: Word/Definition Game We split the group into two teams Each team had a stack of terms and a stack of definitions The first team to match them correctly won We decided to do this activity to reinforce the difficult terms learned throughout the lesson

11 What We Learned: Teaching is not as easy as it seems. We learned how to react quickly by having to change our lesson in less than 3 days before our presentation How to relate a complex topic to the every day life of a fourth- grader Patience
