About the Author  Richard Wright was born September 4, 1908 in Roxie, Mississippi (near Natchez).  He was a novelist, short-story author  Wright, Richard (4 Sept. 1908-28 Nov. 1960), author, was born Richard Nathaniel Wright on Rucker's Plantation, between Roxie and Natchez, Mississippi, the son of Nathaniel Wright, an illiterate sharecropper, and Ella Wilson, a schoolteacher.
